Key stuck in ignition 98 4runner

My key is getting stuck in the ignition in my 98 4runner. When i go turn off the ignition the key will only go to the acc position and will go no further so you cannot remove the key. I must keep shifting, hitting brake and turning wheel to free it up and then it will come out. This has happened twice in 2 days.
Note: this has happened with 2 good factory keys.Almost the same problem happened in my 92 4runner and i had to change the ignition switch. If anyone has had the same problem please let me know as it may also involve the park/neutral safety switch.

sticky ignition key

I have had a similar poblem with my 95 4runner. But what happens is I cannot turn the key and start the engine without hgreat difficulty. The key will come out and go in fine, but won't turn withouth moving the steering wheel around and giggling it a whole bunch. Did you get your issue resolved. I am worried it may develop into something worse it did this a few times and I thougth it was only when I parked with the wheel turned but now it is doing it every time I try to start it. How much did it cost you to repair for you?

Yes I did solve this problem. I answered this in detail on another thread. The problem is a switch lock control switch located under the plastic cover of the floor shifter. This switch detects that the shifter is in in the park position and that your foot is on the brake, this in turn allows the key to turn and be released. I replaced the switch. I think the switch cost around 20 bucks from the stealer. This may or may not be your problem. Note that my 4runner is a 3rd generation (98).

key troubles

Thanks man. I don't know if it is the same thing but its worth investigating. I just signed on so sorry I missed your other threads.

I resolved my issue by going to the dealership and having them cut me a new key frm the vin number/key code. It worked great. No more problems. We determined that the key had worn down so significantly that it no longer engaged properly. They didn't even charge me for the two keys, which was cool.
