"Key to Key Program" from Dealer

I recently purchased a used 2005 4runner.

When I made the deal, the dealership obviously tried to tack on extra costs.
The one I allowed (so to speak) was something called the Key to Key program.

Basically I got one key and a remote.
The dealer said the Key Program allows me to get one key made every year for 3 years AND a remote.
I said to them why don't I get a spare with the USED vehicle. They said they didn't have one and this is better because I can get 3 instead of one with the Program. They said at the cost of making an extra key the cost of the program pays for itself after the first year.

The program was very little (maybe $120)

Anybody ever heard of this.

And if so am I entitled to a remote with each key as well?

I called the sales rep and he was vague on the remote but said I could try and "get one made from the service dept" He acted as if the service dept doesn't really "know" about the TRUE nature of the program and it being used to simply give the buyer more keys.

He said to basically LIE to the service dept and say I need another key and lost my spare.

Sounds like BS to me since you would expect service to OBVIOUSLY know whats really going on.

Thanks

Never heard of such a program. Not sure why you'd need 3 keys and 3 remotes either... I would have asked for an additional key and remote before taking delivery and called it a day.

Not sure why a dealer would sign up to provide 3 keys and 3 remotes for $120, the remotes are usually $75 - $100 each.

If you have something in writing bring it to the dealer and demand you get what you paid for othewise you got hosed....

This sounds more confusing than it needs to be. I'd follow the advice from banker1 and make sure you get it in writing, preferably from the sales or service manager.

Both the key and remote have their own individual codes and must be "enrolled" with the vehicle's computer to work. Unless things have changed, you can't do that enrolling yourself; it needs to be done by the dealer with a dedicated Toyota "hand-held tester." So I'd make sure that the money you're paying entitles you to get both the keys (key blank and cutting) and the enroling/registration.

Just made an appointment and the lady told me TWICE that I would be getting a key made and a FOB,

Twice.
At no charge under the program.

We will see what happens at the dealership.
I have a feeling I will get the Key but no keyless entry FOB

If that happens it's back to the saleperson to complain.

Thanks

You should have got all the keys and remotes with it , what the heck are they trying to pull ??

I say BS !!

I would have to agree. I purchased my 4runner CPO and received 2 keys, and a valet key. Granted, I only got key fob, and floor mats... that was like trying to steal a twinkie from a fat chick...

In the end, you should get 2 keys at minimum.

And, for the record, I got my floor mats... :bash:

From the factory you get two masters and two remote transmitters plus a valet key.

I guess getting three more keys over the period for $120 is cheaper, since the 4Runner keys involve programming for the immobilizer. IIRC, members who have had keys made paid about $100 for a key including cutting and programming. The transmitter can be found new on eBay for about $30-40. Just make sure the FCC ID matches. The transmitter also requires dealer programming.

Also, I think the 4Runner's immobilizer can only allow upto four keys, the fifth key will automatically deactivate the first key that was added to the system.
