Key Whole Rear Tailgate Pushed Through?

So Im in college studying abroad and my father has my 4Runner and went to unlock the tail gate to open the trunk and he said he put the key in and it felt loose and as he pulled the key out of the slot and the little silver piece fell down. Luckily I come back to America next week so can try to fix it or bring it to a body shop to fix it. Has this happened to anyone before or does anyone have any advice? Or maybe how do I pull the trim around the license plate off to try and see if its back there and figure out how to reattach it? I am not very mechanically inclined but want to see if I can fix it myself maybe if its not too hard, otherwise Ill have to bring it to a body shop.

The lock is still in there, hopefully the nuts just came loose and it fell

Inner hatch panel/grab strap/inner plate need to be removed

That gives access to the license plate panel bolts inside hatch

It can be a bit tedious to unbolt, but it gives the access to everything
you need to get the lock tightened back up and functional again.
