Keyless Entry 96 Limited

Was keyless entry a standard option on the 96 limited?

I know mine doesn't have the "security system" (no indicator on dash), but I have no idea on the keyless entry. Got the car used with only keys, no fob. Any way to tell for sure? I'd hate to spend $30 on an ebay remote to find out it won't work.

Not necessarily. My dealer said the same thing...but it just wasn't listed as an option because it was standard in '99.

Are there any "security" stickers on the front windows? Is there a black box under the driver seat (RS3000)? Is there a red LED in the dash to the left of the steering wheel?

Actually in 1996 models the little red light is located near the e-brake lever.

No security stickers, no black box under driver seat and no red led on the dash or the ebrake handle.

I know those are the things to look for if you have the rs3000 security thing, I'm sure I don't have that. But isn't the keyless entry completely separate? I couldn't find any info on how to tell if you just have the keyless entry system...

Keyless entry was not available on the early 4runners. You had to get the dealer installed rs3000. I am shocked your limited did not have this installed. You may want to go to a junkyard and get all the rs3000 components and add them in. I had the installation guide I could send you that would show the parts you need.

I have the factory security system in my 98 limited, but there are no indicator lights anywhere that I'm aware of. Also no stickers too.

I always thought the keyless entry and alarm were standard equipment on all 3rd gen limiteds. Strange.

Unfortunately, there are zero 3rd gen's at junkyards around here. I called around last week looking for a headlight (my driver side adjuster thing broke) and nobody had any 3rd gen's.

It would probably end up being cheaper just to have an aftermarket alarm installed professionally ($160 installed). That way I wouldn't have to mess with any wiring, which I hate doing, and I'd get a lifetime warranty.

Just seems odd. I have almost every single option available on this thing, except for the locking rear diff (and apparently the keyless entry).

Thanks for the help.

It doesn't matter that it was fully loaded, the dealer had to install the alarm. The original purchaser must have declined it. I would try car-part.com to see where 3rd gens are in your area. You need the box under the seat, the dash lights, microphone, wiring harness and the chirper. I would strongly recommend against an aftermarket alarm since they go and hack up your current wiring.

I just went through this with my 1998 4Runner. I have an RS3000 VIP. The box is under my drivers seat along with the stickers on the left and right front windows. Also have the LED light/chirper near the ebrake. The one thing I did not get when I bought the vehicle was the key less remote. Ordered that from a internet vendor found the info online for programming and now I have remote key less entry-along with an alarm system that works which also had to be programmed-which was easy.

Do you happen to have that guide? I kind of want to grab everything I need from the junkyard and add keyless entry

Crazy story but I just purchased a 1996 SR5 and a 2000 SR5. The 2000 has keyless entry but the 1996 doesn’t. Is there any easy way to transfer the keyless entry to the 1996 model?
