the previous owner of my 97 can't find the keyless remotes. i have been looking to replace one and it seems that there are two that could have gone with mine: a black one and a gray one. any ideas on which one will actually work with mine?

also, i believe that the factory one with mine has 2 buttons on it. are the newer remotes that include the back glass button compatible with a 97 runner?

thanks,
chris

I have a 96 and mine had the black 2 button remote. Should be the same for you. I believe the newer remotes should work as well, they all had the same system if I'm not mistaken.

There seem to be 2 remotes depending whether you have the alarm or not, the key seems to be the FCC ID printed on the back. Keep in mind this is for remotes w/ the back window button. My 00 had the keyless but no window button, but I don't have that remote anymore. I now have a 02 Sport w/o an alarm, it came without a clicker. First I got the more popular FCC HYQ1512Y but when I tried to program it nothing happened, so I assume that is for vehicles w/ the alarm. I then got FCC HYQ12BAN and that programmed no problem, both above remotes had the rear window button.

I actually have a spare HYQ1512Y if you want to make an offer.

And don't pay to program whatever you get, find the procedure online, it is very easy and not worth paying a penny for.

I have a 97 SR5 and the remotes are black with two buttons. I bought it used and still can't figure out what the two buttons are for, they both open and close the locks. Anyone one know what the difference is? The truck does have an alarm system but I don't know if eityer of the buttons affect that.

I have a 97 as Well.

I have the key-less entry with remote.

The Remote is a Black Two Button Remote.

The Grey One is for the 98 models, for some reason that year had some change.

The second button on the black remote is just to help you program the remote, or program the alarm to do a specific task you would like.

The newer 3 button remotes will NOT work, I repeat they will not work, the new 3rd gens with the 3 button remote have a different system then the old 3rd gens.

The system that is in my 97 that came from the factory along with I presume all other 97 models equipped with the alarm is the Vehicle Intrusion Protection (VIP) RS3000.

The main control unit is under your drivers seat, you will need to know that when you go to reprogram the remote to be accepted into the system.

Thats about as much as I can tell you off the top of my head, I have the original alarm book in the glove box if you need more info.

My 98's remote is black.

What is the bottom button for...I cant figure it out. The top one locks and unlocks, and it sets off the alarm like a panic button. But I cant get the bottom button to do anything. Any ideas?

BTW. I have 2 remotes and they both do the same thing.

I guess some 98s came with the clack button, but when I was at Toyota getting another remote (cause my old one broke) the gray one was for the 98 and the black one was for the 97&96.

Again, The bottom button is to help you program a remote to the master unit or to any other feature that involves syncing or changing the code for your remotes and receiver.

You would think they would just use one as lock and one as unlock. Because its awful inconvenient to use the same button for two things.

Or as a window roll down feature....

Down the road i will be getting rid of the stock alarm and installing an autostart system that has the remote display, so i can set the aux button as a window roll down.

Interesting. I also have an '02 Sport without an alarm but had the exact opposite results. The -1512Y works and the -12BAN doesn't!
