Keyless entry issue

It seems on my "new to me" 3rd gen limited that both keyless entry remote FOBs only work to lock the doors. The other buttons dont do anything. The power locks function fine from inside using the buttons on the vehicle. I find it hard to believe the remotes are defective in the exact same way, so i am assuming it is something on the vehicle side. I have no idea how or where to start troubleshooting this. Anyone have any experience with this or advice?

I did some searching and found some posts from people with similar issues. I just bought this vehicle and was told the keyless entry worked fine but one of the remotes had a dead battery. Swapped the battery to the dead remote and get the same result. Could a simple reprogramming fix this or is that not likely the cause?

That would be where I would start... The 99+ keyless entry is incredibly complex as there is no real module, it's all just in the wiring harness... Good luck man :-/

I have a 99 and have experienced the same problem. Found a procedure on here which involved locking and unlocking about 38 times in a specific sequence.. tried multiple times and still no dice.

Seems like the solution is to take it to the dealership, pay $89 and let them deal with it.

Here is the reprogram process... It took me about 5 tries.

Hey RAV,

I got your PM-- Here are the instructions for programming the 99-02 4Runner Keyless Entry factory remotes:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle

a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Drive door is open ( all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try
to go relatively fast.

b. Close, then open the drivers door.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before).
b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically)
indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1
if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:

a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter
simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds.
Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then
UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If
the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps
6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.

c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will
operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

I tried about a dozen times and at the very end it would cycle to lock, unlock and then lock again. I repeated 6a and 6b over and over and had no luck :cry2:

I gave this a go a few months back and had no luck. I was getting into the program mode after locks cycle automatically once (step #5) but when I moved onto step 6 A and B, the locks would cycle twice and the key fob wasn't working.

Tonight I decided that I must be doing something wrong so here's what I did.

I did steps 1 - 4A as shown above. At 4B/C, I turned key on and off 5 times total (as opposed to twice). This erased all key fobs for the car. I then went back to step 1, followed directions exactly. This time at 4B/C, I turned key on and off one time total. Proceeded through step 7 and it worked.

A.Wilson, thanks for posting the procedure. Got it to work and now both my FOBs are operational. As reported in other posts, it took several tries but I really think it was more a matter of getting a rythym down. Once you sort of memorize the procedure and can do it fairly quick and with a sort of rythym/cadence, it works.

Also, nice progression on the cars! I went from 1996 Dakar E36 m3 to 1998 Dakar E36 m3 to 2002 Alpine White E46 m3 to 2002 Audi A4 Quattro to 1999 4Runner =)

Yeh, I was starting to think that procedure was just someone's idea of a joke. Either that or I forgot to say "Simon says" before one of the steps. LOL

Not sure what you are referring to on the progression. My wife has always wanted a 4runner, so I bought her one earlier this year. That's the 2011 5th gen we have. I drive a pickup I bought new 7 years ago and have no desire to get rid of it. I bought my daughter a 2005 RX8 2 years ago. Beautiful car and fun to drive but it was finicky. Threw codes for no apparent reason, among other things. She wants to go to college in the mountains, and there was no way I was sending her up there in a real wheel drive sports car that could do anything weird and any given time. So I sold it and bought her this 2000 3rd gen. Seems like a great find, very clean, with new belts, hoses, timing belt, water pump, gaskets, axle seals and differentials serviced. But it seems to have a CAT issue and I just hope it doesn't break me.
