Keyless entry

I recently bought a 2003 4Runner Limited from a wholesale dealership and it came with only one master key, no keyless entry remote. I called Toyota Service Department and they tell me it comes with keyless entry; they sell the fob but I will not be able to program it. Same thing with the spare transponder key. Toyota Service wants an arm and a leg -- $400 to do both. A friend tells me I can purchase the remote from ebay inexpensively and should be able to program it myself. I'm electronically challenged but do not want to spend $400. Please help, anyone! I'd appreciate it.

Buy the key FOB from E-Bay. If you can open and close the door, insert and remove key from ignition and count, then you can program it. If you want an alternative to the dealer for the transponder key, try this:

You can buy the key fob from ebay and the instructions for programming are posted on this forum (do a search).

As far as the key, can buy a key with a transponder but you'll still need to get it programmed by the dealership... To cut and program a key, it should run about $100 approximately plus the cost of the key.

Thank you for all your help!

My friend also says I need to know the FCC ID for the key fob. Because I don't have any of the key fobs, I don't know the FCC ID. How do I find that information? Is it in the VIN?

If I did get the aftermarket keyless remote, is that not going to interfere with the existing keyless program, thus creating another set of problems? Just being cautious. Thanks.
