I have a 2001 Limited 4WD that is having a remote door locking issue. The "LOCK" button on the remote is functional. It works everytime. The "Unlock" and "Back Glass" and "Panic" buttons do not work. But according to the tester at Autozone the remote is emitting an RF signal when any of the four buttons are pressed. I'm trying to find out if it is a problem with the remote device or with the programming internal to the vehicle?

I have tried the established procedures for reprogramming the remote (key, door, cycling the locks) several times and I keep getting the failed result of the door locks automatically cycling themselves twice at the end of the sequence. This means the remote is not being accepted.

The remote is a factory alarm remote with FCC ID: HYQ1512Y.

The dealership wants my left arm and a few toes to get a new keyless remote. I actually knew that before I called them. I'm just wondering if it is common for a remote to go bad? I can get another one on the web for 49 bucks and program it myself. That is IF the remote is the problem.

I'd have to look at my remote FCC ID, but that looks like the right number. I do know that the programming is very finicky. You have to hit the timing precisely or it will fail. I've had to make multiple attempts before getting the timing just right.

It is odd that one button works and the others don't though, can't explain that one.

Dude, I have the exact same behavior! Every once in a while my other buttons will work, but most of the time, only the lock button does. I have replaced the battery and that didn't do it. The tester at autozone showed ok for me too.

When I follow the programming procedure, my locks don't cycle at all, so I have just suspected an ECU or remote receiver problem.

I will be watching this thread with great interest...

My 4runner was having problems with the locks. They would unlock but not lock at all and the remote did not work in any way. I figured I needed to replace the fuse block. However, I took my 4runner off road for the first time and took it through some mud and water and all the sudden the door locks worked. Also, it took me 3 attempts to get the programming to work with my remote.
