Keyless Remote on a 98 Ltd: Gray or Black???

Hello. I am trying to determine which remote I need. I've been sorcing these on ebay and it seems 20-30$ is the going rate (shipped). I've noticed there are two options, Gray or Black, but both have the same FCC. All the listings say "DO NOT ORDER BLACK IF YOU HAVE A GRAY REMOTE" and visa-versa.

The problem is that I do not know what the origional color was (i know it has keyless because when I bought it, it came with one that was all smashed up). I just can't remember what the color was.

Is there a way to check my vin or something?

On my 98 T4R Limited the FOB is black, made as part of the key. Printed on the back is FCC IDELVAT6B. I hope that can help you!! Good Luck!!!

A factory remote should be black,have never seen a gray OEM before.Like Sig220 said you need to have the correct FCC# to make it work,not sure how to do that though if you don't already have a remote to match it to.

Call a dealer and give them your VIN. They should be able to tell you which security system you had (dealer installed RS3000, or factory installed 3-button remote [lock, unlock, rear window]). Do you remember if your smashed up remote was a 3-button?

wow this is something new that I have learned just now. I bought a 1998 Toyota 4Runner Ltd and the seller just gave me the regular keys with no remote.
So by looking at your responses looks like my 4Runner did came with a factory remote. What do you think if I talk to Toyota dealers will they be able to provide a remote? if yes how much its gonna cost me?

you can always check craigslist for a used keyless remote. with the 3 buttons and panic button. they have plenty in my area selling for 20-30 bucks. dont go to the dealership for it, they'll rip you off..im thinking like 60-100 bucks at dealer maybe

Thanks for the help guys. I think i'm going to go with the "black" version. Seems like the safest bet. I will let you guys know the outcome!
