"Kid Proofing" Your 5th Gen

Hi Everyone,

Looking for different products to kid proof my truck.

Ive seen all of the standard Target car seat protectors and of course all weather mats.

Looking for:

-seat protector that wont crease the leather from a car seat

-seat back cover to prevent marks from kids kicking the back of the front seat

-door panel covering to protect from dirty hands touching the panel

-some sort of widow covering on that same car seat side would be great

I covered the inside of the lower doors with 3M clear film since my kids like to push open the doors with their cleats on.

Kidproof: Lift with big tires. No running boards. Kids can't get in to the car.

I honestly do not think it is possible to "kid proof" any car. They will find a way to make a mess. Just do your best to protect the area around them. Also, threatening them with a beat down with a hot oven racked works.

This...but I also have kurgo dog door covers that I had from my previous car when our dog would sit in the back seat before kids. They’re pretty handy and have pockets to store little things as well. Also britax has some kick covers that I put on the back of the driver and passenger seats for when the little legs in car seats (front facing) start kicking.

Walmart has cheapie seat covers to protect the leather from creasing. It doesn't do a great job, but I guess it's better than nothing. The leather on my backseat headrests are creased also from putting up a mirror so I can see my son. Didn't think to put anything on the doors or back of the front seats, but I put weathertech floor mats in to protect the carpet.

Just something else to help out with the kids...a guy on here makes something like these. I have them in my ride and the kids love them. Use them every time they are pulling themselves out of the carseats.

I bought a Sienna and stick the kids in there.

Seriously, I understand trying to take care of the vehicle (and I like mine neat and tidy too) but I try not to get too neurotic about it. At the end of the day, the truck is a means to and end and putting some wear on the interior is inevitable.

I do like seeing what ppl have come up with to mitigate that though. Neat stuff.

I have a strict policy if you are unlicensed (under 16) you're not allowed in my vehicles. works like a charm!!! I also have a strong allergy to tiny humans.

Haha, I bought my 4runner as a vehicle that I would be okay with having kids in. Softex seats and floor liners should do well. I've realized this vehicle has a pretty scratch prone interior and have just decided to deal with it, my 17 already looks more worn at 9,500 miles than my Lexus did at 130k miles or my Infiniti at 80k.

Just as a note, I don't have kids yet, but likely will in the next year or two. We do take our nephew in it who is turning 3 and he is pretty good kid in the car.

I may have to implement the rules about respecting a mans car with my future kids from Transporter 2. Although my wife just glared at me and said yes, good luck with explaining that to a toddler.

i cant speak for everyone...but...
harsh language at the appropriate volume always seems to work for me.

Adding a threat or three sometimes adds to the effectiveness of the protection also, depending on the situation.

I've used the standard Target seat protectors and that works well, but I only regularly use a high backed booster. Any baby seat use is only temporary, and you'll need a higher quality cover/protector to prevent creasing.

The only thing I'd say is absolutely necessary, and worth the money, are all-weather floor mats. There are several options, but I've enjoyed using weather tech.

For everything else, I just keep two tubes of armor all wipes: one for the plastic/vinyl surfaces and one for the leather surfaces.

Some of it is going to scratch and scuff (Because, kids). The only thing I don't have that I might need is a fire extinguisher (Because, again, kids).

Picking a straight stretch of road with light traffic to slam on the brakes and turn around, glaring at the kids with a quivering, distorted face is my go-to move. I've found (unfortunately) it's often more effective than talking.

I have a crap-load of kids, most of them are grown now. So, i totally understand the level of destruction that they are capable of. You want to take out N. Korea? Give my kids some sugar smacks and send them across the DMZ. Anyway, what always worked best for me is rules and such. You don’t want gum in your carpet, don’t let them have gum. Melted crayons? No sir, those are a no-go. If they chose to intentionally destroy a family vehicle, I jerked a knot in their ass. Merry Christmas everybody!
