One note on the post above...4th Gen 4 wheel drive 4runner is only full time on the v8 model. The v6 4runner is part time just like the Tacoma.
That's not accurate. The 4th gen V6 has a true multi-mode system. It is essentially the same as a V8's full-time system, but with an additional 2WD mode. One note on the post above...4th Gen 4 wheel drive 4runner is only full time on the v8 model. The v6 4runner is part time just like the Tacoma.
My son, now 7 and quite tall for his age, loves the rear seat. It is quite upright, but for him, in a simple booster, it's not a big issue.
Both the Tacoma and 4R are SR5 models, 4WD, V6, automatic, no leather. The Tacoma has the TRD package (rear locker, Bilstein shocks), the 4R has a moonroof -- not many other options on either. Base stereos originally on both. The Tacoma has been through a bunch of tires, the 4R only two (OEM Dunlops and snow tires) -- road noise hasn't really varied much no matter which tire is on the vehicle.
The kids don't have a preference on either. The 4R has HVAC vents in the center console for the rear seats, but the Taco does not. Also, the 4R has a fold-down armrest/cupholder in the rear seat; the Taco does not.
Some factors that might make a difference to you, or might not:
- 4R is made in Japan, Taco in U.S.
- 4R 4WD (4th gen) is fulltime 4WD, Taco is part time.
- 4R has projector headlights, Taco regular halogen. Both are pretty good.
- 4R has disc brakes all around, Taco has disc front & drum rear.
- 4R 4WD has A-trac, VSC, standard -- Taco has neither.
- Taco stock stereo sounds better in the back seat; 4R stock stereo (non-JBL) sounds terrible in the back seat, but sounds fine in the front.
- Taco has significantly better ground clearance than the 4R. Ours are both stock height.
- Taco has Class III hitch with the tow package; the V6 4R has a so-called Class III hitch, but it will not handle a weight-distribution setup (the V8 will, and there are aftermarket hitches you can add that will).
- Taco with TRD and automatic transmission has a separate transmission cooler standard (I don't know if the non-TRD ones have the cooler too); the V6 4R does not have a separate transmission cooler (maybe the "Trail" edition does?), but does have one integrated into the radiator. The V8 4R does have a separate trans cooler.
- 4R (4th gen) is available with a V8, Taco is not.
- Taco is available with V6 and manual transmission, but IIRC, not in the double cab, only in extended cab versions. No manual transmission available in the 4th gen 4R.

On the 5th gen 4Runner, only the Limited model comes with fulltime 4WD -- the SR5 and TE models have a part-time system.
2006 SR5 V8. (no 3rd row)
He loves the fold down middle thing with the cupholders, too.![]()
Thanks, Sporin! I bet that fold down thing is a hit. His own little table. This one has the table thing in the front, too, doesn't it?
no real difference in comfort factor between the T4R and our Sienna, far as i can tell.
I went from a 4x4 TRD DC Taco to my current 4Runner and am very happy with the choice that I made.
The back seats are very comfortable in my 4Runner. Although I am do not have any kids, I am 22 and have had many friends who are 6ft and taller ride in the back without any problem, many comment on how comfortable my car is. I have even ridden in the back seat some on road trips (I am 6'2" 200lbs and have back injuries from college sports, so your kids will probably have less issues with comfort than I do). I personally find the interior and ride much more comfortable than my Tacoma, of course now its a harder comparison since my Taco was mostly stock and my 4Runner, well it is not.![]()
I was looking at your mod list in your signature, but am not sure if any of the mods lifted the truck. Can you go the same places with your 4Runner pre-mods as you could with your DC Taco?
It's good to know about the comfort factor for you. A bad back tells you a lot of things quickly about a vehicle!
This is one I'll be sharing with my child. :bravo:
I'm not sure how many parents have their little kids actively lobbying for a minivan, but mine is. I keep explaining ground clearance to her, and asking her if she really wants to stop going to some of our favorite places....
be glad your daughter is only asking for a minivan - my son has decided that he wants me to get the 3500HD crew cab dually for my work truck instead of the Tundra when he found out about the toyota acceleration issues.
he's only six, so i think the concept of "overkill" is still foreign to him.
