Glad I sent them in, one was completely stuck.

Camelback Parts jacked up my second order of shims, sent me the wrong ones, so I'm still at a standstill getting nothing done. Hopefully the correct ones will be here by the weekend.

Hey Kid, where did you get your injectors cleaned? Were you satisfied with the turn-around time?

Accurate Injector Services in Arizona: Accurate Injector Service for fuel injector service, fuel injector cleaning, high performance, calibrate injectors

Turnaround was six days between when I dropped them at the post office and when the mailman brought them back, and that was over a weekend. He charged me $17 an injector, and that included fresh seals and o-rings and the return postage. The local guys I used to use charged $20 an injector, didn't clean the outside, didn't provide a report, and didn't replace the seals. This is the first time I've used a mail-in injector service, but I'll definitely use him again.

Yeah, KidV, please let us know who did yours. These came out of your 85?

Folks,
I'm also considering getting my injectors cleaned, BUT only if their the original Toyota ones. If they're after-market, I'd prefer to buy new aftermarket ones.

Does anybody have a picture of what original injectors on the 1986 4Runners?

Nope, those are 3RZ injectors.

Here's the stock injectors from my '85 22RE, these are the same from '85 to '87. '88 is an odd year, and then they stay the same from '89 to '95.

Hey Kevin, forgot to mention... well OK I didn't know. Injector Tech is right around the corner from my shop. (Unless that's who you used to use?)

(Unless that's who you used to use?)

I've used Certified Injection Service in south Salt Lake before. They've never done me wrong, but they pale in comparison to this outfit in Arizona. The local guys never replaced all the seals and o-rings for free (those are $60 at the dealer), they never cleaned the outside of my injectors like that, they charge more than AIS, and they never included a nifty little spreadsheet with before and after numbers. I like before and after numbers :).

Progress! Not getting this done with the speed I'd like, but I'm plugging away. The valve shims are finally done - I ordered the wrong sizes for the exhaust side the first time around, then they shipped me the wrong size the second time, but it's all squared away now. Got the valve cover cleaned up and fresh gaskets on it, sent the injectors in for cleaning and got those installed, took my high output alt from the 22re into Hengstrom and got it cleaned up and swapped to a five rib pulley, and today Armor Coatings cleaned up the manifold and I got a couple coats of high temp paint on it, so the motor is almost put together and ready to be installed.

3RZ trucks are not at all common around here, but I found a yard in Denver that just got one in and they were able to ship me most of what else I was missing. I still need a dipstick and probably some other bits, but I think tomorrow I can take it off the stand and hang it in the bay and start figuring out motor mounts.

I've got about a month to get this done and back on the road.

you can do it man. It took me four days to solid axle swap the focus from design to rolling (should have done a bit better welding though haha). full weekend and two nights after work. you've got a month. we can do this.

So. Motor mounts. I spent all weekend putting the motor in and taking it out and putting it back in and eyeballing this and that and putting together a template for my motor mount adapters. Here's what I was thinking about scabbing together, and I'm gonna show you even though I'm not doing this because if I went to all the effort of taking pics then you all can danged well look at 'em:

But I don't like it. There's a lot of reinforcement needing to happen there, and it seems kludgy and overworked at the same time. I had a sit and stared at it for a while this morning, and right about the time I decided I really didn't like it, I realized that it wouldn't work anyway because the distance between the Tacos frame rails are different and this would likely make the motor sit too high.

A little digging found me this thread on Pirate: Just some 84/85 3rz swap tech - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum. This is the route I'm going to go. I kinda had it in the back of my head that I didn't want to move the original 22RE frame mounts just in case I had to put a 22RE back in, but who does that? I'm going to work with the angle grinder on cutting those mounts off now. Anybody want to bring a cutting torch over and save me some time? :)

I looked at your pics as instructed.

Good call on not using cardboard for you motor mounts. :D

I think cardboard would have been fine. It's not like I actually drive the truck or anything, it mostly just sits in the driveway and I pretend to work on it.

If it looks crooked, that's because it is. The 3RZ is a tall motor, taller than the 22RE. It's designed to sit slantwise in the engine bay. I'll see how it sits once everything is final, but I may have to make a little room for the power steering reservoir on top there.

The fellow in the Pirate thread I linked must have had different engine mounts or a different frame. I cut the mounts off the frame and hacked an inch off each one, and now I've got a 1/4in gap between the mount and the frame when they're bolted to the motor. I wanted to box in the bottom of the mounts anyway before I weld them back on, so I'll plan on boxing the back too. With 1/4in plate. :thumb:

This is fecking awesome!! I wanna do the exact same thing on my truck! So you doing this is pretty effing cool, its sort of like a guinea pig of sorts haha.

Don't feel too bad. I think your annual mileage still far exceeds the annual mileage I put on my 4Runner.

What's the story on the bike I see in the first pic? It reminds me of an early '80's Seca 650.

CB400, 1981 I think? Gotta check the title. That was supposed to be my winter project...

Thanks! I don't have anywhere near the balls to pioneer a swap though, there's no way I could do this if a bunch of other people hadn't done it first and then posted about it :thumb:. I'm getting all my info from the Marlin Crawler boards with the occasional Yotatech or Pirate4x4 thread for good measure. If you wanna know nearly everything I know about this swap, go read the official 3RZ swap thread by BigMike.

It's the type of stuff like that which makes these boards special. I'm gonna be paying attention to this thread. Your Runner is gonna be a beast, and get good gas mileage when its finished.

One of my buddies in Highschool had an early 80's parallel twin CB400. Another friend had a Yamaha 400 Maxim, and I had the use of a CB750 owned by a cool Uncle. Man we had some good times.
