Got it down to Mike's shop a couple weeks ago, and we both had time to play today so we got busy. Took out the stock harness, cleaned everything unnecessary off the motor, hacked up the old burnt harness for connectors to build the new one, and got to soldering.

My new wireless harness. How cool would it be to stick bluetooth transmitters on all the sensors?

When you are discombobulating a harness, strict and accurate labeling of the plugs is essential.

The new harness will be about 26 wires, plus or minus. That's all of them, though we're going to make the connections on the Megasquirt and be sure that everything is happy before we tidy everything up. This is going to be a much cleaner engine bay, I'm stoked for that if nothing else.

Here's the rest of what's hiding in that shop on a Sunday afternoon - lots and lots of Rich People Cars, and this is only one side of the entire garage. The Bastard was certainly out of place.

Me too. There's a reason there's 5 Rover/BMW specialists in town and only one Toyota specialist, and it ain't because there's more Rovers and BMWs on the road.

No idea. As far as I can tell, nobody else has Squirted a 3RZ and posted it on the internet. There are NO 3RZ builds on the Megasquirt forums, and the guys on Customtacos and the other performance forums all seem to be using other computers. There's one guy on the Marlincrawler board who is going to use a Megasquirt, but I think I'm ahead of him.

All of which is to say, we're going to be building/programming the computer from scratch. We have no base maps to follow or any idea what we're doing. Wiring the thing up is the easy part.

I've known of a few people that have used a Megasquirt system on cars and bikes. I haven't dealt with them myself.

There is a lot of info on how to set up and tune those systems on their website, however.

You probably mentioned it, and I'm just forgetting from huffing too much CH3NO2 fumes, but why are you going with a Megasquirt system over the stock 3RZ EFI?

For fun, mostly. It came up when the third ECU we tried turned out to be bad and took the distributor with it, and I was about ready to see if I could order a new ECU from Toyota when Mike offered to sell me his Megasquirt he wasn't using. I'd been kicking around the idea of eventually boosting the motor in the back of my head, so the idea is attractive. It's a little more work and a little more down time, but what's that at this point? When I'm done I'll have the motor I want on my terms.

Still working on that harness - it's kinda slow going, because I'm triplechecking everything before I solder and heatshrink, but it's actually sorta fun. This morning I mapped out all the wire colors coming off the individual sensors and such, and got a preliminary routing and dressing done. I've had to repair lots of the factory wiring due to cracks in the insulation, so I think I'll get my hands on a bunch of heat reflective tape to wrap the loom in once I've got the routing finalized. Next step is to sit down with Mike and a box of crayons and make sure we know what goes where on the Megasquirt pigtail before we finalize those connections. Then we can plug the computer in and maybe start programming.

Me too! I'm not allowed to wheel the one that works though. I came back from a morning up AFC with new pinstripes in the paint and she chewed me a fresh *******.

Still figuring out the wiring, and getting closer, but I had a minute to finish a couple little things. I don't have the stock air box, and the Megasquirt doesn't read a MAF, so I chopped up the intake and threw on a crap Spectra filter for now. I needed a place for the air temp sensor, which the Megasquirt DOES read, so I drilled a hole in the tube and grommeted it for the sensor to plug into. Worked out pretty slick I think.

That's not going to stay that way. The filter hangs right over the exhaust manifold, so at the least I'll build a heat shield underneath it. Ideally I'll build an airbox on the rear of the inner fender and use an OEM filter in it, and I might rig up a snorkelish thing there so I can draw air from outside the engine compartment completely. Still chewing on that though.

Also finalized the throttle cable - I don't have the Tacoma cable. I thought about shortening the 4Runner cable with a cable clamp or chunk of lead or something, and that would have been one way to do it, but I like cutting stuff with the angle grinder. I hacked up the Taco throttle cable bracket and spaced it away from the throttle body enough to put me right in the middle of the adjustment range on the stock cable. I rolled the edges of the bracket to improve rigidity. #bootyfabftw
