KidV's 1985 4Runner

My friend recently completed his 3RZ swap with an ORS harness. He said he would pay for the harness again in a heart beat, it was so easy.

Have you decided on a new front axle housing? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

Toyonlyswaps and ORI have conversion harnesses too, they run $600 or so. That's almost my new front axle, so I think I'm going to give it a swing myself first.

So. New plan, I'm going to quit screwing around with the Megasquirt and just run the stock ECU. I have a '95 computer and what I think is a '96 harness. I need to get the wiring diagram for the '96, and look to see if the pins are the same on the ECU, I'll probably have to repin one or two things, if they're too different I'll just pick up a '96 computer. I need to look into the antitheft and see if there's anything there to defeat, and I need to find out if the ECU is dependant on the Tacoma's VSS to run. If so I'll have to figure out how to spoof that signal. I'm sure I'll run into other things that need jimmied, but at least I'll have a roadmap to follow instead of trying to break new ground.

In 96 there shouldn't be any anti theft to deal with. 99 was the first years and it was only in Lexus and limited 4runners

TrailGear, probably. K.I.S.S. and all that.

That's good to hear, thanks!

So I'm tabling the Megasquirt. It'll stay on the shelf and maybe when I'm feeling ambitious I'll come back to it.

In the meantime I have a 95 computer and a 96 harness and a writing diagram for each, I'm going to see if I can repin the harness to match the computer. I bet I can.

Some motivation :)

So I'm pretty stupid when it comes to reading a diagram, but I couldn't find a difference between the two harnesses. I asked a fellow who ought to know, and he tells me the only difference between them should be a connector towards the back of the valve cover for a "vapor pressure sensor", which this harness doesn't have. So maybe it IS a '95 harness and even if it's a '96 I shouldn't have to repin it at all?

This is not good news though, because Mike couldn't get spark or fuel with this harness and ECU, so either he goofed (a possibility, nobody is perfect) or this ECU really is bad like we thought it was.

I give up. I'm going to get a conversion harness built. I'm going to ship the harness and some donor connectors off to Cliff at Toyonlyswaps. He'll verify the engine harness will work and build me a conversion harness. If the 3RZ still won't start after that then I'll be pretty sure I've got a bad ECU. Cliff is in Creswell, OR - I wish he was closer, because I'd love to be able to bring him the whole truck.

dang man, its no fun when stuff isn't working. glad your making strides to get it going though, even if they are bit more costly!

$400 for the Toyonlyswaps conversion harness, not that bad really. I've got the harness in my hands, probably won't have time to do anything with it until after Christmas though.

Any news? Is it possible that you have an ECM that was equipped with Immobilizer? That would not allow spark or fuel.

I really hope not. Near as I can tell the '95 Tacoma didn't have any anti-theft, so that shouldn't be an issue. Although again, this goes back to rule number one, which I've learned about fifty times over at this point - don't attempt your first swap without a running donor vehicle.

Back at it!

This is $400. Not bad, it's nicely loomed and shrinkwrapped, the plugs are all labeled. He forgot to label the bare wires I'll need to splice, but he emailed me the connections so that won't be any trouble.

I spent a while yesterday reorganizing my tools, getting all the stuff I use most commonly out of the big box in the garage and into these rolling carts. Much better. Much less time spent running back and forth between truck and garage.

The engine bay is a mess, the wiring all torn apart and etc due to some other stuff I was fiddling with, so that's what I worked on today. Got the battery harnesses put back together and all the grounds reattached, putting the top of the motor back together and such. When that's done I'll put the engine harness back on and then I'll be ready to install the conversion harness and splice the wires and maybe turn a key. Lots more little stuff to do before that happens though.

Huge storm coming tonight, and I'm leaving town in a week, this might be the last I work on it until January, but it's a start.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one doing wiring! Need to redo my harness too, but for the supra, not the truck:

Unfortunately, nobody's making wiring harnesses for an '85 supra, so I'll be doing it myself. No biggie for me though, probably won't have the engine finished until spring so I can just take my time and do it right the first time. Just need to get new injector clips built and wired in with a quick disconnect molex plug, that way I can swap in the stock injectors to get stock ecu and engine fired up, then swap a whole new harness in for MS setup!
