Kinda gunky valve/cam area

Is it stupid of me to think I can blast the valve/cam area with some degreaser since I have it open. Engine has 230k, and is kinda dirty:

I wouldn't. Just keep running synthetic and it'll clean itself.

Too much risk of destroying something in the head. You'll never get all the degreaser out. To do it right, you should pull the heads.

I'm with nely on that. That looks real good for the mileage. I'd bolt it back up without losing sleep.

I concur with the others that said leave it alone. You should see some of the pics of sludge build-up some have posted on this forum. Your's is in great shape.

Yeah you wouldn't really want to "degrease" these components that are high friction and typically have a nice coating of oil on them. Not to mention a lot of it would drain back into the engine anyways. It looks fine and its typical for high mileage engines to look brown like that on the inside. As others have said before, just keep changing your oil regularly with high quality oil and it will be okay.

Cheers guys! thanks for the input. I tend to use Castrol GtX high mileage synthetic. What do you guys use?

I used Mobil 1 High Mileage and change every 5K. Any good synthetic will be fine.

Castrol and mobil are my brand of choice. Synthetic or not.
