I've been thinking the same thing. If I'm only getting 15-16 MPG why not get another vehicle that has a lot more power?

One thing holding me back from other vehicles is reliability.
 
jared i think he thought i was a girl, i thought he was referring to my rig when he said what does your BF think of this... but i guess not ;)

Hey dude you don't have to spend $6,000 to add to your truck.

* Your tires look just fine to me, BFGs are more than enough, you don't need mud tires.

* You already have 4WD and could easily add a rear locker of some type for $600.

* You don't really need a front locker unless you are super hardcore and the vehicle should not be a daily driver.

* Rims can be found cheap, get a set of used for $300 and paint them.

* Supercharger is a waste of $ unless you are running a 4 banger or it came with the truck. My V6 has more than enough power, now that I added intake and exhaust.


I once considered selling my truck but I am sooo glad I didn't. I now have a used Camry as a daily driver.
 
my truck had a lot of power i think, i can still do a burn out with 33s ATs.................................hitting the redline of course

this is not something I would ever try to do on my truck with 204,000 miles. I try to baby my tranny and NO slippage to date. kind of paranoid about my drivetrain I guess.

I tell ya, the real questionable move you made was to go from So Cal to Alaska. I hope that job pays well, and mean $50/hr +. I've been to Juneau in winter, never again. I hate when it is less than zero F or C outside.

That said, only shoot for the 7.3 powerstroke if you are thinking Ford Diesel. I would have to say Cummings gets my vote (5.9), even though it sounds like an industrial sewing machine at times. Get a good look at the trannies of both before buying.

I agree with you on all aspects except the S/C. While my 4runner is fine right now with no lift, it would be nice to have some extra power on tap when needed. I get a little discouraged having my tranny downshift at any hill. Its a million times better than my 3.0, but it would be nice not having to worry about slowing down or pushing my engine harder to get up hill. I loved driving my s/c tacoma when I had it and will be s/c my 4runner in due time.

I just get sick of people saying our 4runners aren't race cars. Obviously, but there isn't anything wrong with wanting some more power. It's nice not having to worry about switching lanes up hills or merging. Just my opinion though and not targeting you brian.
 
just to clarify, I would love to have a supercharger!

I just meant that if he only has $4-6k he may want to put the money elsewhere first.

Yeah I know what you mean. Really you don't have to have all the upgrades for a s/c. They are recommended, but 6 months to a year without the upgrades will not kill your engine and you can get a s/c for ~1k-1.2k by itself these days. I had a chance to buy one for $500, but didn't have the money at the time.

OP you should get gears and see how you feel. The only lame part is if you get gears you might as well get lockers and that can get expensive.

Are you high? Alaska >>>>>>>>>>>> So Cal. The cities in Alaska may be kind of crappy, but get outside the city and you have some of the most beautiful and awe inspiring terrain in the world. I would kill to go to Alaska.

And you do realize that 0° C is different than 0°F right? 0C ain't bad, 0F is getting chilly.
 
Ask your avatar buddy Sir Stewart how much a bald man likes cold weather. When you can lose up to 55% of one's body heat through the head, it ain't pretty. I am bald, horse shoe, not cue, but I hate the cold. I do know when water freezes. Cold is cold.

For example I love Boston, and was able to garner a position at a small consulting firm in Waltham, but turned it down to make $30,000 less in Virginia because of the winters there. I'd really love to live in FL and fish all day. Yep, that makes me a little nuts.

Having been to Alaska, I do like it, great fishing and scenery, a real cavalier or Wild West aura. But just to visit. I'd have to say that the OP needs a truck there, especially to live but I have seen a couple of 4runners outside of Fairbanks owned by a mining company.
