"Mudding" Disaster Lo
So today i felt like getting the 4runner a bit muddy since it had rained a bit the previous night and i knew this spot where everyone i know goes to have fun so i went there myself. Well i guess i basically forgot i was 2wd, open diff and had michelin street tires so i got stuck within 5 seconds lol. I had to crawl out and go onto the road and i flagged down a 4wd tacoma. He was ready to help and i got my tow strap out and tried hooking it up to his truck but it was kind of short. Shortly after a huge 2nd gen shows up, i couldnt get a pic of his rig because i was trying to get mine unstuck but he was lifted quite a bit and he had a huge set of duratracs. anyway he asks me if im "locked and in 4wd" and im like "man im 2wd open diff" lol. hes like what you thinking going in there? haha. But i got my 4runner out of there thanks to the help of those 2 and it was alll so muddy haha looked badass to me but yea i couldnt see out of my passenger side windows lol. But this experience has taught me something, i need to get some good all terrain tires or mud tires and at least get a LSD so i can still have some fun with my 2wd. I think in the long run i will want to convert to 4wd. But here are some pics

But yea i think i learned my lesson on what to do and what not to do with my truck at the moment. But its good to know there are good people out there ready to help others in need and i appreciate them.

Check out the lights I used in the rear bumper. They do a pretty good job, and are cheap. plus they are probably easier to install than the ones you are talking about above.

I think ive seen a few pics of your rig with those lights and for some reason i like the oval ones a lot better. They just flow better with the bumper IMO. I thank you for your insight and opinion though

Hey, great build thread. I love all the stuff you've done, especially the blacking out. I am now really considering painting my chrome bumpers black, I think it looks way nicer. Quick questions, what did you use to add on those extra 3 12V outlets in your center console? Was it just an adapter you chopped up? Also, how has the paint stood up compared to the plasti dip?

Steering Wheel Cover
So today I was out running errands and I bought myself some fuel stabilizer since I'm not taking my car to college freshman year and my parents will hardly drive it. I didnt want my 4runner to not start when i come back lol. So while i was at autozone i decided to try out this mossy oaks camo steering wheel cover since i the stock black steering wheel gets kind of hot to the touch. and this steering wheel cover feels pretty good, nice softer feel than the stock wheel but still a bit firm. the rubber grips are nice and have a bullet pattern on em and the camo on it looks nice with the tan interior

Thanks I appreciate it! and Yes the black bumpers do look really nice. and for the outlets i used a circle bit like this http://www.interior-design-it-yourself.com/images/installing_kitchen_countertop_drill.JPG i think it was a 1" bit?
and i bought 3 individual "add a 12v outlets" from advance auto parts like these http://www.lulusoso.com/upload/20120405/Auxiliary_Power_Socket.jpg
I soldered all of the wires together and ran the power to a fuse tap with a 10amp fuse in the interior fuse box and the ground to a bolt under the center console.
and the plastidip was on the bumper for a long time like almost 2 years. There were some spots where the rocks and mud had torn it and the chrome was showing but overall the plastidip held up well. but i feel like the paint is a better coating than plastidip due to the overall finish, quality, texture and durability. Plus if you scratch it you can just scuff it and repaint it.

Nice.. thanks for the breakdown, I'm gonna use your info as a guide to do a similar install. That's a perfect spot and makes it look like a factory option, it's definitely one of the cleaner installs I've seen on here.
Yeah, I did notice the plasti dip pulling away from the edges in some of your earlier pics, that's why I asked, and now I'm gonna copy you again and go straight to painting mine, lol. I'm subbed, mods are tasteful and clean.
Also, I'm digging the muddy pics, I always tend to get mine super dirty like the day after I wash and wax - but I guess that's what trucks are for.
How long are you gonna be away from your runner? Just a school year? I would die without my truck by my side

Your welcome! and if you have any questions feel free to PM me or post on my build thread. And yea it is basically a perfect spot since i dont have the factory rear heater option. A suggestion that i would like to give is that when marking the holes use a piece of painters tape on the plastic and drill the holes through that so that you can get a nice straight row. and thx! my goal was to make it look as factory as possible. And yea the plastidip pulled off on my rear bumper when i put that rear plastic piece back on. and after awhile it came off on my wheels. I didnt strip the chrome or anything on the bumper i just scuffed it as well as i could using 80 grit sandpaper and make sure its nice and scratched before you use primer. and haha the mudding was fun even though i made it like nowhere haha. but yea damn right that is what trucks are for!
Yep 1 school year (not counting thanksgiving break, winter break and other times i come home) and yea its going to be tough. I'm used to driving my 4runner everyday its like a part of me and it wont be there this school year :/ but i think ill be able to take it sophomore year at least.

SmittyBilt Fog lights
Well its been a damn long time since i posted anything on here. I've just been so busy with school. Engineering is damn hard but i gotta get through it because i know that's what i want to do in my life. anyway more on some updates. it sucks that i don't have my 4runner here with me in college. i cant work on anything of my own or even drive anything. it kinda makes me crazy that i cant do that. but i still am going to be buying little things here and there so that every time i go back home, i have something to do on my truck. so here is the latest thing that i have bought. Smittybilt fog lights made for their M1 Truck bumpers.
I know that they are not meant for a 4runner at all but they are a universal fit type application. And the crappy chinese projector style fog lights that i have are terrible. the supposed "3000K" hid kit in there sucks so bad and i really want to have a hyper yellow looking fog light output. so these lights have a yellowish lens/ mirror reflective finish similar to the piaa ion crystal lights. and so that along with a 2500k Nokya hyper yellow bulb should give me exactly what i am looking for.

and these are the bulbs that i will buy soon.
In order to mount these fog lights i will have to modify the front bumper fog light opening and create a mounting bracket that is similar to the factory mount. these fog lights are 2.5" in diameter so the cutout will have to be enlarged using a dremel

6" Driving Lights
So I bought another pair of lights to replace the ones on my front bull bar. These are basically knockoff 6" KC Daylighters with a yellow glass lens instead of clear. I'm going to take them apart, scuff up the chrome finish and paint them gloss black then put on these KC Stone Guards that I bought earlier. I'm not entirely sure whether they will fit on the bull bar or not, but I plan on purchasing a full brush guard for the front anyway. I also had a moment of like revelation you could say. I was reading up how to properly wire the lights that I want to install and every online source says to use Relays in order to keep the high current out of the cabin of the vehicle. I definitely had been doing this wrong so I will post pics of redoing the wiring of my lights when I get the chance to install them.

I'm basically going to be collecting parts in my dorm room for awhile so that when I go home during some of the weekends or breaks of school, I can get some work done. but damn I miss driving/working on my 4runner :/
So I bought another pair of lights to replace the ones on my front bull bar. These are basically knockoff 6" KC Daylighters with a yellow glass lens instead of clear. I'm going to take them apart, scuff up the chrome finish and paint them gloss black then put on these KC Stone Guards that I bought earlier. I'm not entirely sure whether they will fit on the bull bar or not, but I plan on purchasing a full brush guard for the front anyway. I also had a moment of like revelation you could say. I was reading up how to properly wire the lights that I want to install and every online source says to use Relays in order to keep the high current out of the cabin of the vehicle. I definitely had been doing this wrong so I will post pics of redoing the wiring of my lights when I get the chance to install them.

I've been doing pretty much the same mods except I picked up the Pioneer x4500bt and it refuses to let me change the background!!
ps. I have the Rockford Fosgate terminals and it's the same deal. Too tight on the pos side and way too loose on the neg.

haha lol but weathertechs are awesome! money well spent for sure! and thats a nice headunit! Eventually I want to get upgrade mine to a nav unit, probably a high end pioneer unit but thats wayy down the line and ohh it took me awhile how to figure it out, are you using a custom background?
and yea the terminals confused me, but i swapped them and they fit better, or i guess i wore down the battery terminals enough to where they fit great. whatever happened they fit awesome now haha.

Fog Light Install
Well I came back from college station for the weekend and the first thing i do is get to work on my truck lol. I immediately found the KC Stone guards that I bought in the summer and threw them on the 6" lights. then i got to installing the wiring harness for both pairs of lights. I wired them using the relays and hooked everything up properly. i tested out the little fog lights and damn those suckers are bright and pretty yellow for not having a yellow bulb. I cant wait to see what they look like with a Nokya 2500K H3 bulb! Anywho, i just left everything prewired so that i could take the 6" lights apart and get rid of that nasty chrome and paint it black. Hopefully i can get everything installed tomorrow and get some output shots, but the 6" lights are to large for my bull bar so ill have to make some sort of custom bracket for those to mount on and also my fog lights are going to need some sort of bracket made out of bar stock.

Fog Light install continued...
So today i was able to do a number of things:
-I took apart the 6" lights and i sanded them with 80 grit, then hit it with some black and clear spray paint
-Created brackets and mounted my smittybilt fog lights and extended the wires for the wiring harness.

they are golden yellow! and this is without a yellow bulb. i cant wait till i put Nokyas in em. Ill get some nights shots tonight as well as some shots of the 6" light put back together.

I am really satisfied with these lights i also know that i need to enlarge the fog light opening in order to push the fog light farther forward so that no light is seeping out from under the bumper and it looks more professional.
