Knocking in Auto Trans at High Speeds?

Hey all,

So I have looked up this problem with no avail.

My problem:
I have mild jerking/knocking of the vehicle going 60+ mph when changing gears (Automatic Transmission). It is somewhat light but noticeable. It also sometimes happens multiple times in one gear change. The transmission seems to be spot on when changing gears in any speed under 60, being really smooth. I have checked the fluids and everything seems fine. Any ideas?

Please throw me more questions to aid in the diagnosis.

Your overdrive or torque converter could be going out. O/d is very weak and is typically the first gear to go. Do you tow with your truck?

I don't. But it is lifted up. So maybe that could be doing it?
Could I eliminate O/D by simply turning it off prior to driving? And if I still get the knocking, then it isn't OD?

Yes see if you turn o/d off if it stops. But my dad had an 01 tundra and the p/o had over loaded it all the time he had it and it stripped o/d completely out a few years after my dad got it

UPDATE: So I drove my truck on the interstate this morning, and noted a few things:

1. Turned "Overdrive" off, and the stuttering actually got worse
2. Got a lane to myself and gave it wide open throttle, and noticed my tachometer waddling up the gauge.
3. At the same time as the previous statement was occurring, I was also getting a very mild (front to back) shuddering motion from the entire vehicle.

But this only happens around 60-70 mph. I have noticed that wide open throttle even on back roads will cause the throttle lagging and tachometer needle to dance its way up.

Could it be my torque converter? Another thing I must say is that my transmission filter is factory.

No, I haven't gotten the tranny serviced lately. And no, I haven't had the pink milkshake. Now it has gotten progressively worse.

Now its whenever I give the truck a good amount of throttle, it jumps its way up to speed. I might also mention that it takes a second or two longer to start my truck with the key, and this has started along with the weird throttle lagging I'm getting. Anything with coil packs or spark plugs?

The truck also seems to not like going any higher in RPMs than around 3300. Is this a sign? When I give it throttle, I notice it changes gears quickly to avoid going around that high.

What about when your stopped at a stop light does it run rough? There are a lot of people that talk about when they have bad plugs it shifts a little rough but it runs roughy at idle in gear.

You have a 2002 which is fly by wire. It sounds to me more like an electronic throttle body, TPS type problem than a failing trans.

Alright, so I've created another thread with the similar question, and leaving out the "T" word, as I don't think it's the tranny either. If I don't get anything relevant on the new thread, I will delete it, but

What about when your stopped at a stop light does it run rough? There are a lot of people that talk about when they have bad plugs it shifts a little rough but it runs roughy at idle in gear.

When I'm stopped, it sits at around 900-1100 RPMS, and sounds super quiet. Runs right and doesn't shake or anything. I've only noticed the jerking and jumping when I give it WOT "Wide Open Throttle" or if I'm on the interstate and anything over or at 60 mph gives me this jumpy feel whenever I give it gas over 60.

so a parts store scanner is no where near what good it would do to have a real one. i really like MODIS from snap on if you can barrow one from someone for like 30 min it would do you good. you can watch live readout of what your tranny and engine are doing. that will bassically tell you what you have. good luck!!
