Knocking noise when in gear

Let's hope it's not a plug that came loose as suggested or that can cause a lot of damage to the head, coil or plug wire, plug threads and highly likely to allow debris and broken plug material to get in to the combustion chamber doing permanent damage to effected cylinder, not a good situation for such a simple thing. If that plug is loose it will hammer away until disintegrated doing unknown amounts of damage.

Literally, the same problem my truck has. It is a rhythmic thud that goes away in park and neutral and is loudest in drive w/ your foot on the brake standing still. I took it to a reputable shop recently and they said "maybe the timing belt" so I let them do a time belt job and on it and it still makes the sound (though, perhaps a little quieter). Anyway, I've been driving it this way for 4-5 years and ~ 100K miles and it hasn't broken down on me yet, so I finally got tired of chasing it and have accepted it is just something with 3rd gens.

Hey guys,
I know this is old but I figured I am still not alone in this.
I have the same rhythmic chug as mentioned above and have just lived with it.
The noise seems to have begun after replacing timing belt, water pump, aux belts, spark plugs, wires, 1 ignition coil, and valve cover gaskets.
Since I tackled a lot of tasks at the same time it's hard to say which or if any of those repairs caused the issue. I did check valve clearance while I had the covers off and everything looked really good.
I do have a small ticking sound but I was more concerned with the issue stated above which sounds more like a rhythmic chug only when warm, and in gear.

If anyone is interested in keeping this thing alive with any of their thoughts, it would be much appreciated.

Huh, funny, I was also having this "chugging" sound but couldn't find anybody else talking about it back when it started for me. Same deal - only happened in gear and on the brakes. I always compared it to cam lope or how a 6BT chugs
When it first started during the summer it was out of the blue and real damn loud and very clearly coming from the passenger side, so I assumed maybe a valve guide wore out or something else cylinder head related - but it kinda rapidly tapered off and settled, then eventually it just totally stopped and the times it would come back it was maybe 1/4 of what it was (and tbh, sounds kinda good like that lol). Sometimes it would be quiet at one stop light, I'd drive 45 seconds to the next one and it'd start up. Right now it's totally gone for me for whatever reason, but at any rate it's clearly not cylinder head related. Otherwise it would've went downhill in a hurry. Maybe exhaust related?
The first time it happened was like 2-3 days after an oil change so I religiously checked everything I could think of but found no answer. I figured it was the beginning of something catastrophic and time would tell but clearly it's the opposite. Really curious to see what somebody finds out one day :noidea:
Does make me feel better that it's something common though!

Edit: I should say during this time I've replaced all evap valves/solenoids, threw some motorkote in the oil, changed the oil and replaced it with 40 weight (had Amsoil in when the sound started and put in some T6 after the change), replaced the PCV, changed my alt, checked the water pump pulley, cleaned the PS pump+replaced the sending line, replaced fuel pressure reg and fuel injectors - none of which made any difference on it from what I can tell. So if you're having this trouble and were considering any of these, maybe look elsewhere first
