I have a 3rd gen '98 4runner and need new shocks. I do mostly on road driving....but still like to go off-road every so often. I want a set of shocks that will be able to handle the stress of off-road. I am trying to decide between the KYB Monomax ($256 shipped) or a set of Bilsteins...which i can get for $289 shipped. So price is not an issue....let me know what you think is a better all-around shock...THANKS!!! These are supposed to be a late xmas present so the quicker the better...

I dont think they are as stiff as people say. They ride very nice on the highway.
probably depends on your tires and tire pressure too.

So I have a 2004 SR5 and 140K with V6. I am on fence between KYB G series or Bilstein 5100. I keep hearing stiffer. I am only a part time off roader, just looking to possibly level out and have a nice road ride. So many say 5100's. Can you pleas post what you have experienced. year and street or off road. Thanks. The posting limit is very frustrating. I get the spam thing, maybe admins could wave the limit at request? Great source of info though. Thanks.

That's a serious thread bump. Almost 10 years.
Anyway, you will probably have more applicable advice in the 4th gen section.
But FWIW, I've had Bilstein shocks on vehicles, and liked them. I have new KYB Gas-A-Just shocks on my 3rd gen, and I'm happy with them so far. I'd call it a controlled ride, but not uncomfortable.

I thought my KYB gasadjusts were a little firm. This was new shocks on 150k mile coils up front and new moog coils with air bags in the rear. I think the rear firmness was due to the airbags having to be up so high to keep the back from sagging, but I'm actualy happier with the way it rides now lifted. I've never rode in a 3rd gen with bilesteins but my dad's second gen tacoma rides pretty smooth with the 5100s.
