When shifting (turning knob) on my 2006 4Runner it takes almost 2 minutes for the light on dash to stop flashing & the truck to actually engage into 4WD. Is this normal??? Once its in 4WD its great but the lag time is not acceptable to me & at times going from dry to snow covered areas I need it alot sooner than the time mine takes...Only has 9000 miles on truck & this is my first winter so I am new to this experience...Thanks in advance!

2 minutes seams like a long time to me I think mine only takes about 8 to 12 seconds at the most and im in and out often (I often go from snow plowed roads to non plowed roads here in Western MA.) I think I would have that looked at.

On my 2000 Tacoma, I've found that if I shift into 4WD while moving, then backing off the gas for a couple of seconds seems to help it engage.
Based on the other thread about "differential disaster - almost", you don't want to be engaging it just as the road conditions get bad. It's perfectly safe to run it 4WD on dry pavement "just in case" you find a bad area in the road.

Like mentioned, backing off the accelerator for a second or two quickens the transition as well as driving in a straight line. When there is snow on the ground, then chances there is also ice so I keep it in 4WD the entire time. There isn't a huge hit on gas mileage so it's not a big deal to me. Also as an FYI, you're suppose to run it in 4WD at least once a month for about 10 miles (according to the manual).

With my old Jeep with the select trac 4wd it always went in better when I would "drop it in 4x4 with my foot on the gas then take my foot off the gas for second then re apply the gas"
My Taco also has to move a little bit to lock the hubs. If I shift it while the truck is parked, the light will blink a long time (don't know how long) until I start moving. Then the light goes out.
I'd say that if you're having this much trouble with it, get the dealer to check it. At least you now know the first couple of questions they'll ask, and you can say you've tried that.

Try running in in 4WD all the time during the winter. I live about 15 miles south of you and I keep mine in 4WD from December until the end of March. No issues and nothing to think about. In the spring, I go back to 2WD mode unless I am off-roading.
