But my few cents...
Depends on what series and what you up to spendin' on mods...
The 70 series are quite beefed up and strong trucks, very capable, easy to modify for larger tires. Short version has 8" front/rear diffs, and coils!
longer series have 9,5" front/rear but leafs...
60/80 series are bigger, heavier, more massive and the same, easy to modify and great engines available.
60 series has 9,5" front/rear diff, leafs I think most of the time. 80 series has 8"front/9,5" rear diff, coils around...
90 and 120 series, well...
I'm not very fond of 'em but they've been doin' alright. I'd never run any larger tires than 15" with the IFS on, but some like it abit bigger...
I like the diesel engines available, but don't really know much 'bout the gasoline engine...
And finally, hopefully I'll shock someone with these pics... lol
This proves that the 90/120 series CAN be used, at least for snow (and probably mud as it's very similar in many ways) for abit of offroadin'...

I saw a few lifted LC's (cant figure series/year) probably mid 90s in panama when I was there a couple years ago..... at the end of teh pan-american highway, leading up to colombia, there is supposedly some VERY SERIOUS offroading...
and our vehicle wasnt equipped (some kind of nissan midsize 4x) so we didnt go check it out, but im gonna see if its visible on google earth....last i checked alot of central america wasnt... anyways cheers!

Land Cruisers are definitely the most popular 4wd in Australia, mostly because they have excellent off road capabilities. Search around some aussie sites and you'll find tons of pics and info. Here's a link to the Toyota Land Cruiser Club of Australia http://www.tlcv.org.au/TripPics.htm
Although the looks have to grow on me for the 08's I still think they are very capable offroaders . I've seen pics of them , read some reviews , and the aftermarket is already hitting on then with bumper options , lifts , ect....
I saw one in a magazine that had front and rear fabricated bumpers , winch , tires , lift . It kind of changed my view a slight bit as far as it's appeal to me.
Granted I think the older ones with the solid axles are much nicer as far as offroad ability and the absence of so many electronic do dad's . I would prefer having an older one. I'm just not up on the number system and what years and style they are. There is one that is my favorite , but don't know what number it is (as far as the US versions) , I only see it driving on the street and saying ..... "thats the one I like" ......lol.

Yes, they are. 70, 80, 90, 100, 120 have been very popular for modifications.
Especially 90 series.
I myself like the 4runner the most, but I could consider ownin' one 70, 80 or 90 series Land cruiser. =)
Btw, there is also some info 'bout LC on yotatech, but not quite as much as on the aussie sites. =)

Land Cruisers are very popular in Arab countries as well. One of the times I was deployed was to Qatar, and the time I was able to go downtown Doha, I noticed that just about every cop car was a Land Cruiser (and the others were different Toyota models).
One of the morale things for service members was an off-roading adventure through the desert over dunes, etc, and they exclusively used Land Cruisers. I heard it was pretty fun & wild, but never got the opportunity to do it.
Of course I also saw many Lambos, Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, and lots of Porches too. Not a poor country. And WE'RE giving THEM money... Go figure.
Anyway, also saw a crapload of Predos too. Here are a couple pics of some I saw.

From the front it is almost exactly the same car, really, the only area they changed is the rear pillar (c pillar?) the rear side windows are king of puny..thats it.

4runner (especially the newer series) are quite puny compared to the 60, 70, 80 and 100 series (also 105 series, UN version with a solid front axle with 9,5" 3rd member *drool* )... the 90 and 120 share the same frame as the 4runner...

Saying that, the 4runner is far from weak. My buddies 03 suburban Z71 had to get towed out of our parking lot today..fuel pump....figures shitty Americna cars. Anyway...the frame on the Suburban is SOOO tiny compared to that of the 4R. Not only was the steel not as thick, the dimensions of the siderails were much less and the entire thing looked like it was rotting.

It is a European version and is modified by a company in Iceland called Arctic Trucks. This one is running 35x12.5 R17's, and I am not too sure about the lift. Also, I think the after market over fenders look great on it.
They also have a military version that they run 37's on, hard to look past the color at the actual vehicle though.
