Land Cruizer Coils in Rear

I have heard alot about LC coils in the rear on 3rd gens, like Sn0wrunner recently did, but I can't find any good threads on the subject either here or at yotatech. (yup, I searched, but aint' that good at it I guess).

I have moved from rear OME 890's up to OME 891's (thanks Ron H.) but still don't feel like I have the load capacity I need. 90% of the time I wheel, I camp, and I do so with a big family, dog, water, beer, etc. We pack about as light as anyone could expect with three kids seven and under, but the last trip I kept smacking my tow bar when going over big humps in the road.

I am now thinking about moving to OME 892's (probably will wait until I get the weight and extra clearance of a rear bumper) I am not sure if that is the right move, or if I should go with the LC coils. So...here is the main question:

Are LC coils on a 3rd gen going to help with load capacity issues, or is it just for massive suspension lift? I know they work great for you, sn0wrunner, but you don't carry even close to the weight I haul.

If they give massive lift, and I ride them significantly compressed from the weight, will that then give me even better flex? (since the extra compression will give a lot of travel for the wheel to drop) Are the LC's taller than the OME 892's when uncompressed? If so, do you think they will even out once loaded?

Lots of tough questions, but even if someone can just post some links to other threads that would be great!

Thanks T4R.ORG.

I just recently installed LC coils also.

I used 97 Land Cruiser SE 4WD coils which gave me about 6" over stock.

From what I gathered, 2WD LC coils give you about 3.5" and 4WD non-SE give you about 4.5". I would say non-SE 4WD coils would give you the best look coming away from OME springs.

And if you think about it, they MUST have a greater load capacity because these are FRONT coils on a giant LC, which is a hell of alot heavier than the rear of a T4R.

Yeah, I second what Liny said... the LC coils arent just for lift... you are talking about a coil that holds up the front of a heavy Landcruiser engine that has to weigh more than any of your gear...

I got about 4 inches of lift from the 93' LC coils I got and when I placed them next to my stock coils with 2.5 inch spacers they were the same height...

I also tested out the coils with a trip to the airport to pick up my in laws... dont tell anyone, but they each are at least 250 if not 300 each... thats 600 pounds plus 2 heavy bags, not sure what the flight limitations are these days, but im sure they pushed it...

Plus a full tank of gas and the back of my 4runner barely dropped, it still sat high.

I just moved 2 weeks ago and i was loaded up! I wish i would have taken a picture! The rear was sitting pretty much level with the front. And i was packed to the max! Even my roof rack was full of stuff. If you put the LC coils in you will not be dissapointed. The rear will not be saggy with your load. Trust me.

LOL... I was gonna try and take a pic of them in the car... but they wouldnt wait for me to get the camera out! In their defense, they were outta state for several weeks and just wanted to go inside...

Yeah, LC coils are the way to go as far as im concerned... I LOVE them, just cant wait to get my coilovers and my rock sliders on!

Thanks for the numbers LINY. Personally, I like the sound of 6" over stock, but better add the panhard drop bracket and brakeline extension for that. My guess is I will lose a few inches with the load I carry.

Hey I'll take your old OME coils...just PM me!
Let's just wait and see what I come up with. I am sure it will be a while, but I am also sure I will post when I do it, so just remind me.

Yeah man! you definitely should have gotten a picture of that. Real world examples like that are worth their weight in gold...what's that old saying..."a picture is worth a thousand words"! In reference to LINY's post, do you know if yours came from an "SE" or not?

Ha, Ha! yeah, you would have to make some kind of excuse of why you wanted the picture of them in the runner. Don't really want to say the truth on that one!...wait...I am not too far off from 250lbs... ;): lol
What year is yours? Mine is a 2000, and it looks like I would need to do a body lift before I could get sliders on my frame (body hangs lower than top of frame)

If I went with the land cruizer rear coils (6", SE) I wonder if it would be too much rake for my front OME 882's. I don't mind a little bit of rake. I guess as easy as it is to change coils, I could get the LC's, and just check it out. Keeping my OME's until I know for sure. So let me get this straight...I am looking for front coils, but what range of years?

Anyone out there running OME 892's for a comparison to this discussion?

mine were only the 8 wrap coils. So I don't think they did. The SE are 9 wrap. The 8 wrap are more common than the 9.

they are fj80 series. Which i know for sure includes years 94-97, but could be a few other years as well.

With the load that you carry, I think the rake will be pretty minimum when you're packed down. You'll probly be at the height at which you normally ride now. And I would guess you'll have about 2" of rake when not loaded down.
