Larger Tires and gear ratios

Hello, Im new to the forum and have already found a lot of useful info here. First, I have just purchased an 05 limited 4.7 V8. My question is about gear ratios after a lift and bigger tires. What kind of work are we talking about after a spacer lift in re-gearing? How did others here tackle this problem? How has gas mileage been effected?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

welcome! you really don't need to re gear unless you are going with tires 35" or greater. I have 33" and have no problems in town or on long hills.

4.56 is the ratio needed for your 5 speed if you plan on running 35's. and you won't want to run that size with a spacer lift. it takes some work to fit 35's. stock final drive ratio is 3.73 it is pretty versatile.

Thanks, that info helps a lot. I went to a local shop and they were telling me I would have to re-gear with even a 1" change in tire size.

to the man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail..

money grubbing buzzards :bash:

Just keep in mind the higher the ratio the thinner the ring gear gets making breaking them easier. Doubt you'd have a problem unless you went pretty serious on your off-roading, but it's possible.

Also, regearing means resetting all the axle hardware (shimming of gears, etc.) once you do it. It'll probably cost you $1000 to do it.

Maybe for a V6...I've got 456 on my V8 and it's perfect. IMO 488 your runner would be screaming on the freeway.
I think 4.88's are better for 35's :)

Re-gearing will cost anywhere from $900 to $1200. Depends where you go and if you re-use bearings, etc.
