I think we’ve pretty much made our decision - we’re going to go with the Motion XT in the XL size, along with a set of aftermarket roof rail crossbars to avoid clearance and excessive flutter/movement problems.

Thule Alpine, extra long box for downhill skies and snowboards. Not the tallest box, but its much more streamlined for the long trips to the hills.

Would you be able to share what rack you are running?

We ended up with a Yakima CBX 18, mounted on the Yakima Jetstream towers and aerodynamic crossbars.

Nice - I have the CBX 18 as well and it is massive! Mine was mounted to LFD crossbars, which isn't ideal, but with lead times and a 2000 mile road trip, I needed something fast.

Has anyone had any luck on a full roof rack set-up with these recessed cargo boxes (Thule Motion/Force or Yakima CBX)?

The OEM rack was clearly not designed to "mount" things to. It was intended to "strap" things to.

Gobi. I have never gotten the appeal. Round tubing was cool when designs were based around round shaped vehicles. Now everything is angular. I much prefer the shape and utilitarian designs by most manufacturers. Gobi and other tube designs labor costs must be pretty steep which is the reason UpTop, Victory, Sherpa, et al designs are less expensive.
