Last Minute Advice Needed - Tires

After getting the idea from you guys in these threads, I successfully lobbied for a full credit for my OEM tires. Thanks!

The Firestone dealer said his two best tires were the Revo 2 and the newly redesigned Alenza (with a H speed rating). Because I was looking to maximize my dollar and get whatever improvements came with the best tire I could get, I chose the Alenzas.

However, after scouring forums and reviews here and elsewhere I can't find a whole lot of positives for the Alenzas and it seems almost everyone loves the Revos. Of course, I would love to have the more aggressive tread and to run an all-year tire that would take me on summer off-road adventures with confidence, but I still remember going from my Michelins to BFG ATs on my old Tundra and loving the look but feeling like I had lost quickness on the road. But, I have read reviews of Revos that suggest I will still feel improved road response and handling compared to the OEM HTs, so I'm kinda itching to go that way instead.

Of course, I could ask for Blizzaks (I think) as I live in Reno and just postpone the decision until spring, but that's not my first choice at this point.

I have a 9:00am appointment this morning, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Revo's are a great tire on-road, you won't be giving up road comfort/drivability with them. You do give up some with the BFG A/T's. Our 4th Gen 4Runner is on it's second set of Revo's (not II's). We got 80k out of the first set and have over 60k on the second set so far. I have the BFG A/T's on my 5th Gen 4Runner Trail because I wanted something with a little more aggresive look. Still, the Revo II's look much better than any of the stock tires.

I think the Revo is a great upgrade - On or off road, it seems. I really want to change the installation at this point...

I've been breezing through the threads looking at whether or not I should try going to 275s as well. In my experience, sometimes a larger/wider tire makes a huge difference and sometimes it creates funny ride issues - Assuming the dealer will let me do it, I wonder if the 275 is a good call...
 
Just swapped out the OEM tires for Revo 2's and can verify that they both look awesome and drive noticeably better. Didn't think I was going to notice that much of a difference but it was perceptible. A larger more agressive tire that rides the same and handles better then OEM... Nice work Bridgestone!

Are you noticing any more road noise or worse mpg?
 
Had Dueler AT revos in my jeep and loved them. Great in the snow, quiet on the hwy, long lasting.

The Alenza is an HL tire not an AT tire. HL is more road specific and not really any different than what you are getting rid of. You need to decide what type of tire you want for the conditions you drive in.
 
Sorry for the delay in posting - I took the family to Hope Valley today in the new rig. Boys rode in the 3rd row "just for fun." Wife thinks I'm a genius. Always wanted a 4Runner, so when she nixed the 3 Series and we saw the new version of the 3rd row this seemed like the obvious choice.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Called Firestone and changed to Revos. Rescheduled for tomorrow. Feelin' good and excited about the decision...

Look, the bottom line is that even though I had a Tacoma and a Tundra, my most recent vehicles were a WRX and a Legacy GT. So, to me the 4Runner is just a sloppy, numb, overly plush mess (but I'm lovin' it just the same). So, anything that gives me true utility and enhanced road feel without too many trade-offs is welcome - After all, once you have an automatic it's pretty much over anyway, right...?

I'm going to go with either the Revo II or Destination. If I go with the 275s, will I have any rubbing? Most of my driving is highway...some off roading. Not enough to make that my primary tire size issue. I want a tire that won't cause any rubbing issues with the stock suspension.

Don't know for sure but you may need to adjust the inner fender walls a bit like I did. It was really straight forward once you get under and look at how it is attached. Loosened one screw slid it forward to give some more clearance then put the screw back in. You have a SR5 so it may be slightly different.

I put 275/55 Revo II's on my limited. No rubbing, no issues at all. Look much better, not quite as smooth as stock (barely noticable), no diff in mpg.. very pleased. Here's a pic:

Heygenius - where did you buy those tires? I am getting some push-back from my local discount tire about upgrading the tire size. I might just drive up to VA and get them.

I ordered them from the Tirerack and had my local shop (Progressive Automotive in Stafford) install them. I've used this shop for years. They're very professional and they had no issues whatsoever. Since it was part of my purchase I have my dealer do oil changes and tire rotations. Just had that done this week and other then complimenting on how much better the wider tires look, they had no other comments. Hopefully you can find a local shop to install them. I've been extremely pleased with them. I had them on a gen4 and had great luck.
 
Update

Got the Revo 2s after a little delay. Here's the quick verdict...

Cons
A notch slower off the line.
A smidge louder.
Probably worse MPG.

Pros
Look amazing (my 5-y.o. said daddy had monster truck tires - nice)
A true year-round tire (snow in the winter - trails in the summer)
Highway tracking seems a notch improved
Low-speed maneuvering feels more solid and sure (good "stance")

Key improvement: Due, I think, to a firmer tread and stronger sidewalls, the handling around turns (both tight and "offramp style" rollers) is greatly improved. In essence, the tire seems like the proper match to the vehicle from an engineering standpoint, so the package works better together than before. The OEMs seemed designed to offer the best possible MPG and little more - They felt squishy and under-built for the vehicle (kinda like when your rotors are just too small for the load you're carrying...).

Actually, now that I have been able to play with it a while, the attributes of a tight steering radius and easy steering at low speed are more appreciated and now balanced and enhanced with a better-matched tire. I'm pretty happy...
