Late transmission shift into 2nd when taking off

So the wife said she thought the transmission was shifting weird in our 2006 4runner Sport (just rolled over 100,000 miles). I drove it myself and it's fine except for turning right down a hill from a stop sign...the last stop before my driveway. So at this stop sign I turn the wheel right, give it just a little gas, and straighten the steering up as it's rolling down the hill and give it a little more gas...that's when it happens.

I was able to recreate this on a straight flat road by shifting all the way down to 2nd (using the shifter) and taking off. The tranny kinda "drones" at a high rpm in 1st before actually finally shifting into 2nd sometimes. It's like the tranny doesn't know which gear it actually wants to be in, 1st or 2nd. When it actually shift into 2nd and all the other gears everything is fine.

I plan on doing a fluid change soon but I'll check the fluid first. Weather has been a little nasty so it's going to have to wait a few weeks for the fluid change. I was thinking I saw something one time about a computer reflash for the tranny but I could be mistaken.

What year do you have, is it a 4th Gen?

From your avatar and your signature it appears you have a 2002 which is a 3rd Gen, so you may have better luck posting in the 3rd Gen forum section and not this section which is the 4th Gen section, the transmissions are different so not many here may not know or have any experience with the 3rd Gen transmissions.

My wife drives a 2006 Sport, I have the 3rd gen as a toy. So we have both a 3rd gen and a 4th gen.

Here's the steps I use for my 07. I believe they are the same for 06+. The 03-05 the steps are the same BUT the pin numbers to jumper in the OBD2 connector are different. I just keep a paperclip in the door pocket.

Backoutt, what you're describing there is the process to perform the Zero Point Calibration. To the best of my knowledge that only affects the stability/traction systems and does not interact with the transmission. I've been wrong before though.

I'll still try it anyways since it's free...if it ever stops raining. I'm concerned about it, I feel like if it's not shifting then it's probably just roasting the clutch packs
