Latest 3rd Gen to 5th Gen Convert

Well, I did it. Went out to do some more comparison shopping between these two, but came back with a deposit on a new 2010 SR5. Local dealer found a vehicle in transit to another dealer and worked the numbers to my acceptance. I should have my black and tan leather SR5 in a week or two.

I only thing I really made note of during the 2010 test drive of the 5th gen SR5 was the power steering felt quite a bit more boosted over that of my 3rd gen. Hopefully that won't bother me too much. Now, I just need to get some running boards - when they become available.

Somebody mentioned earlier with a link that the OEM running boards were on Ebay already.

Congrats! I just picked up my black SR5 w/premium package (tan leather) last night! Apparently that color combo is rare (at least in Texas), my dealer was great and had mine re-routed as well, took less than a week. He had only 9 miles when I picked it up!

I threw away the running boards the day I took my 3rd gen home.

I would understand someone doesn't want to take the running boards off if it comes with them, but, why you wanna pay some big $$$ to put them on?

is it just a 5th gen thing?

For my needs, it was a 3rd gen issue too. I need ready access to the entire roofline to handle tie down straps, as I carry a lot of cargo up there. If running boards were an option at the time of purchase, I would have included them in my purchase request. As it is, they will have to be an additional purchase. I can do my own install.

One other thing to note is that, while the 3rd gen's ground clearance is higher than the 5th, the entrance height is lower. For people who are vertically challenged, the running boards may ease entry a bit, particularly if someone is a bit older. I had a good friend who fit this description go with when I test drove the 5th gen. She confirmed that as soon as she stepped into the vehicle. The running boards may not be needed by everyone, but for a lot of folks, they are desired to make their life much more enjoyable.

I love my 3rd gen but, while there has been much posting of the modest dimension increases between the 4th and 5th gens, the increase in size of the 5th gen over the 3rd is fairly significant.
