Leak from transfer case to driveshaft.

I have the dreaded transfer case actuator leak. I recently changed the T-case oil and added White Sheppard leak stop to the mix. This stopped the actuator leak quite well. :banana:

About 2 weeks ago I noticed another oil spot under the 4R so I took a look. Where the rear drive shaft connects to the T-case there is a drip of gear oil. Any suggestions on what it could be? I will snap a photo tonight and post it up.

Thanks any ideas on the cost to replace at stealership/private. Is it a difficult job to DIY?

not sure havent had to do it on the runner. clean the area really good and take a short drive around the block. come back inspect to be sure of the leak area first. call the dealer or your prefered mechanic and ask how much to replace the rear dirveshaft output seal. let us know what you find too in case this ever comes back up.

There are a few threads on here where guys split & repaired the tcase. The output shaft seals are usually easy to replace. Sounds like you need to find a good toyota indy shop to do the work for you.

I called a few dealerships and the lowest one quoted $285.00. They went on to explain to me that something probably caused the seal to fail (u joints, drive shaft etc). Any idea if this is correct or are they up-selling me. The 4R had a through inspection before I bought it and none of this was found.

Also a few weeks ago I drained and refilled the T-case with new gear oil. I may have overfilled the case a tad. Would this cause the seal to fail?

A bad ujoint or bent driveshaft could cause a vibration that could toruqe/flex the output shaft and wear the seal.


How much is a tad? Did you use synthetic? It will sometimes cause leaks that conventional oil wont due to it cleaning the seals and gaskets of old buildup that was actually forming a seal.

It was dripping out when I stopped pumping it in the fill hole. I let it drip out of the fill hole until it stopped. I used Mobile 1 75w-90w.
