Leaking Gas Tank - Need straps to complete fix

Hi there,

I've gotten myself into a little bit of a bind. My gas tank started leaking and the sending unit is leaking. My mechanic has found me a suitable replacement for $250 CND (tank + sender), but the straps and skid plate protector or strap need to be replaced because they are corroding away, and he can only find them at the dealer for $660. The vehicle is starting to fade, but I just need a quick and cheap fix to get it back on the road for now.

I know these straps are not expensive, but all the used parts guys in the area have gotten rid of the ones they have.

I'm honestly starting to contemplate getting some good ratcheting straps and seeing if that would work. I'm also away from the car so I can't tell whether that would work or not.

I also can't drive the car away from the mechanic because of how much gas is leaking. So I would need them to replace the tank, and then apply the 'solution' on site.

Anyone have any advice? and if anyone parted out a 4runner recently and has straps they are looking to sell, let me know. Thanks.

If you need just a quick fix to get it home, then use some 3/16 coated steel cable wire and clamps that you can pick up at Home Depot or Lowes etc..

Then you DO need to get some real tank straps!!

Don't use ratchet straps. That's the sort of thing you do to get off the trail, not for driving around on the street.

If you can't find a set of tank straps at the wrecking yard, have a local fabricator make you some. Either would be way cheaper than paying for new straps at the dealership...
