Leaking Sunroof. Any fixes out there?

Hello.

My mother's '98 4Runner is leaking from the sunroof. It looks to me like the rubber/plastic around the glass has finally given in to the Califonia sun.

I have searched here and read that the gasket is not sold by itself and that it costs $500+ to get a whole new glass with the gasket.

Has anyone here done a fix that was both cheaper and water proof?

Make sure the drains are clear. Most seals don't hold out all the water on a sunroof, thus the drains.

How is it leaking? Is the gutter filling up, and overflowing or is it dripping from the plastic that surrounds the glass? If it is filling up, then the drain holes may be plugged. If it is seeping through the seem in the center, then check out the write up I just did. It worked for me.

I wanted to reactivate this thread since nobody answered the question and I have the same problem as the OP.
The leak is NOT from clogged drains that fill with water from around the sliding galss mechanism. It is leaking specifically through gasket that surrounds the glass. My drip is coming in from the seam dead center in the front of the moonroof trim. If you run your finger from the center of the moonroof glass straight forward, the first piece of plastic you hit is the part that the water drips though. The water drips from this seam onto the very edge of the headliner and drips stright down on to my console, usually filling up my cup holders, depending on the angle I park the truck. The drip channel in the roof with the drains is dry.
Are there any repair kits available for resealing the glass with a new bezel/gasket? It appears you can remove the actual glass panel with four screws.
I would prefer not to seal from the outside with silicone or similar which could be rubbed or scraped off.

For whatever reason, my write up is broken… but here it goes again.

The fix is Superglue. I filled that seam with Superglue (the squeeze / squirt tube, not the brush on type) on both sides, top and bottom, which in 2 years has not rubbed off. It sealed the sunroof leak, and it has not come back. Even after the torrential rains we had yesterday in Northern California.

When I went into the dealership to see about a new plastic gasket, in which I found out I would have had to buy the whole sunroof, I looked at other 3rd Gens, and saw that most did not have that center seam. Go figure..

It didn’t take a lot, a little dab will do ya.

Interesting. I figured sealing the seam would just trap the water resulting in a potential mold situation. I siliconed the rear on the seam so that (hopefully) the water will drip out at the front of the seam and fall into the drip channel, rather than the car interior. I suppose I will just close it up all the way.

just to make it clear, i only supperglued the middle seam top and bottom, not around the whole plastic piece around the glass. just where it leaks.

So we just had some nasty rains here in Boston and my silicone job seemed to do the trick. The water was dripping freely from the front of the split, and it was dripping just in front of the headliner, straight into the drip channel and out the drain tubes.
I prefer to have the water flow out, rather than seal it in so as to head off any potential freezing/cracking issues in the winter.
