Leaking water pump @ 63K

I was very surprised last week to find the water pump on my 04 2UZFE leaking. Especially since I changed the coolant @ 15K miles with oem toyota super long life coolant. I was pleased that my over priced platinum warranty covered the repair and my local dealer also installed a new timing belt (that I provided) at no additional cost. They also changed my weak hood support pistons under warranty as well.

Okay, I gotta ask... why would you even think about draining the coolant on your '04 at 15K miles? Starting with the '04 model year, all 4Runners came with the 100K mile coolant right from the factory!

BTW, did you do the flush and refill yourself or did you have it done at a shop or dealership? The reason I ask is because there could be a chance that they drained your system and refilled it with the wrong coolant that has sacrificial silicates. See, the factory fill coolant should not cause your water pump seals to fail simply because it is silicate-free and will not harm pump seals.

I had to change the thermostat and housing when I was installing the supercharger. I didn't want to reuse the coolant so I had brand new Toyota long life coolant on hand that I refilled with. If I didn't have to drain it I would never have changed it that soon.

Okay, that makes sense. But you would probably only lose a small amount of coolant changing out the thermostat, so I'd think you would just top it off with the right stuff.

I guess you're just one of the "unlucky" ones that has an early water pump failure. That should prove to be very rare on the 4th gen 4Runner due to the coolant used in them.

Somehow I think the supercharger might have put a little extra wear on the waterpump. I bet that thing torques the crap out of your timing belt, which probably wore out a water pump that wasn't 100% to begin with.

I'm sorry but that makes absolutely no sense. The supercharger is driven by the accessory drive belt not the timing belt. Thanks for your opinion.

sometimes you get parts that fail early. I had a fuel pump fail after 7,000 miles that was from Toyota. I have also seen timing belt failures occur before the required service interval.

On the opposite of the spectrum I had an 85 Toyota Van (orginal owner) where I never replaced the water pump in 330,000 miles and 11 years of ownership when the vehicle was scrapped in 1996. The engine failed before the water pump did
