Leaking XREAS Service / Replacement

I am looking for a cost efficient solution to my leaking front XREAS suspension (both), any ideas will be greatly appreciated. I have an '04 T4R LTD and I do not intend to lift it. The dealer says I will have to replace all 4 shocks. Are any of these parts serviceable, could the front shocks be re-kitted?

Where are they leaking from? Any pics?

Individual X-REAS shocks are replaceable. You may be able to find some used ones cheap on the boards.
 
I thought XREAS was an "all or nothing" system. It's shipped to the dealer already plumbed with all the shocks connected. The dealer just has to install and route the lines correctly.

As far as warranty, isn't the system only covered in the first 36k miles (or 3 years whichever comes first)?

As far as I could see, the leakage could be from the top seal around the rod. The whole shock strut is quite wet with suspension fluid. Any idea what kind of fluid this is, hydraulic or ATF?

I have 76K miles already so out of warranty.

I wouldn't mind if anybody has some functional XREAS for trade. The dealer price is way overboard for me at this moment.

Hmm, that's somewhat unnerving about the XREAS leaking at 76k miles. I've got 75k on my '03 Sport and worry about how long mine will last....

The only advantage I've heard is that if you replace it at Toyota, there is a lifetime warranty on all of the parts.... (This is true for standard shocks and I don't see why these would be any different, given the price you pay to have them replaced).

Ricky, you're right about the lifetime warranty after you have replaced it once at the Toyota dealership. But, over the weekend, I was quoted $2300 before Tax, parts plus labour, and that kind of worried me a bit. Upon that I may have to wait for however long it takes them to order the parts then, leave my T4R for a day or two at their dealership while they fix it.

That blows, cause that system is designed for life of vehichle unless under harsh use or conditions. Sry to hear that.
 
Sounds like a good excuse to go with a coil over setup. I'd never pay that much to replace the stock XREAS.

I hope you can get them lower on the price. It is hard to believe how much they mark up the price. You can replace individual struts/shocks. No need to buy the whole system.

For $2500, you can get a complete Donahoe Racing setup; coilovers and upper control arms up front, rear springs and shocks.
 
X-REAS replaced......

Hey Falkon, I replaced mine on my 03 SPORT just last month.....

Went with Rancho's.......daddy like!!! Cost was less than 900$ Installed!

This might help!!! I know what you're going thrtu what with the ridiculous replacement cost for OEM from Toyota!

good luck in your quest! If you do go this route, check to see if Adjustables are available for the rears as well.

Thanks for the update, I can see you're really very happy with the swap, that's great.

I kind of have enjoyed the feeling you get with the XREAS at corners with minimal body roll and I am more inclined to replacing it though my wallet thinks otherwise. Just trying to rationalize between Want and Need. A functioning used set at reasonable cost from members maybe the way to go for me right now.

Well, I have the main components that they took out of my 4R....if you're looking for certain parts I might have em......I'll try to post some pics of what I have that the Installer removed.

I was gonna offer what I had on the Classifieds if anyone wanted to make a bid......it wont be much....
 
Falkon AFter 55K miles the ride started getting mushy and the ride and handling was starting to have a "worn out" feel to it...

Driving over speed bumps, I could feel it bottoming out most times unless I went reeeaaal Slow over em and the potholes we have in Hawaii?? forget it, sometimes felt I would have to go to the dentist with all the rattling and stuff....I was also thinking eventually it would start to loosen things on my ride!

Turning was a little better but the handling was diminished from new but then again, I did ride my ride hard at times. I never thought twice about putting my baby up a curb or anything, now mind you I didn't abuse her; just used her.

Since my REPLACEMENT, I've noticed a far better ride than before and handing has improved somewhat BUT Rancho is no X-REAS and I will be the first to admit, IF i had the cash to blow, I would've went back to Toyota to have it replaced.

I mentioned 1500$+ being quoted to me...that was simply for the MAJOR COMPONENTS ONLY, springs, struts, shocks, NOT EVEN the resevoir? that holds the hydraul. fluid or the lines or nuts/bolts/etc, etc...and Definitely NOT INCLUDING LABOR.....The Service guy ballparked it at about 2500$ give or take.....

As I mentioned, my replacement was dictated by my wallet and I feel I made a great choice. Hope this helps...Good luck! Aoha

Good to know someone thinks otherwise. I suppose you would have been quite happy with normal shocks had you not have experienced the XREAS cornering attitude.
