Learned something about oil I didn't know and cost me

I use amsoil gear oil. In our last 4runner I changed it and bought enough to do the 2018 I have. We don't drive. The gear oil is 7 years old and was told it has a 5 year shelf because the additives start falling out of it.

What do I do with it now? Is all oil like that?

I also have two quarts of Ravenol for the transfer case. Guess I missed that one.

So shelf life of amsoil gear lube is five years? I will use it if it was a sealed container. There are a many vehicle's out there driving around with 7 year old gear oil in the diffs and transfer cases.

I thought the same thing. She said you can't mix it back in. It does seem odd.

Peace of mind sometimes out weights practicality. Do what makes you happy.

I would just replace it, the cost would be well worth the peace of mind.

Who told you this? If it wasn't a manufacturer, take it with a grain of salt. This is the mechanic equivalent of a guy at a Toyota dealer knowing what's going on at the Tahara plant about 6th gen production before covid happened.

Good to know, not relevant currently as my rig is drinking gear oil, but I will now be writing the date of purchase on any bottles I buy.

The oil traces its origins to dinosaurs which are now extinct. Then they pull it out of the ground, refine it and put it additives and it suddenly has a shelf life? Me thinks Amsoil wants to sell more oil and the she at Amsoil is a robot that’s full of shit.

I thought that also until I opened a couple of factory sealed 10 year old Mobil 1 oil bottles . It was very lumpy.

If that is correct then that's a negative for synthetic oil. I've got quart bottles of dino (non-synthetic) Pennzoil I bought 30+ years ago and it is definitely not "lumpy". Doesn't look like anything has settled out of it either - when I empty the bottle there is nothing left on the bottom.

She only speaking on Amsoil. I did find it on the web, along with 5-years for mobile 1 and other stuff. I the valvoline was the best. I know people like valvoline for their 4runner.
