i've never done more than change oil on any car i've had. i'd very much like to start learning how to work on cars, specifically the 1st gen 4runner i am planning to purchase

1. what tools to purchase?? i want them to last

2. what to read?

3. maybe a community college course?

firstly, i want to be able to maintain and do minor repairs. secondly, i'd like to be able to upgrade/modify etc.

Sears craftsman tools, Lifetime warrenty...I can't tell you how many socket wrenchs I have broken, Take them in no questions asked get brand new ones.

The best place to start is get a Haynes/Chiltons manual for your 4Runner and read and start doing some repairs.
and freinds that know how to work on cars/trucks is the best place to learn even if your just helping.

Good luck and have fun:D
