leather seats

have any of you had positive results in getting your leather seats (particularly driver's seat) re-upholstered, i.e. was it worth the cost and/or effort?

I would just go with a set of DECENT seat covers. If you get them redone, it'll crack again. Not for a while, but it will.

As soon as I got my truck, seat covers went on. They're from autozone, but they work ok.

I'm in the process of waiting for a set of front seat cushions, just the foam part, so I can make some for mine.

I'll be keeping the patterns that I'm going to use, so I can make some for other people if they'd like.

Yes, but here in Houston it wasn't by the dealership. They sent me to another person who sent me to to a shop that specializes in leather work in automobiles. They used a better quality leather than what toyota used. Tanned it just right and and stitching. Was very impressed with the work.

applying conditioner helps a ton! the side parts where the seat adjustment tabs are at (electric seats) is vinyl and tends to be the first thing to split and crack.

it gets even worse if your short / lifted truck where you are sliding in and out. that kills the seats

There are lots of threads on this but not very many good ones.

Call your local upholstery places. I know several people who have had their seats re-done to match factory. Usually $150 - $200 per driver or passenger seat.

I plan to do my drives side seat pretty soon. At < $200 it is worth it just to fix the leather since all the other seats are fine.

I had considered some seat covers from either Wet Okole or something like King's Arsenal/Coverking Tactical seat covers with the various pockets...

Wet Okoles are expensive. But well worth the price. I think for all 4 seats in the truck it was going to be like 600 or something like that.

Is there a difference between the leather seats in the Limited and the leather SR5 seats?

Apart from seat heaters.

One thing I recommend whenever replacing the leather is to make sure you replace the seat cushion/foam as well. Worn cushion creates loose leather equaling premature wear.

Here is my seat recover thread on IH8MUD. I got the new covers, a new drivers seat cushion and seat heaters for both front seats. I just got the drivers seat finished and I need to update the thread with new pictures.

Metric TLC 96-02 4Runner Leather Seat Covers (Picture Heavy)

They are a much better quality leather than the OE and though rather spendy, I am very happy with my investment. Plus I can now say I have recovered a set of seats.
