Leaving Keys Behind...

Hey all,

Looking for suggestions on leaving my keys behind when out fishing, kayaking, running, etc. I’ve enjoyed Ford’s SecuriCode before, where you can lock your keys inside and can re-enter using a keypad code. I’ve seen a couple cheap aftermarket options that are similar, but none look too promising. Also not a fan of the “stash it on a tire” mentality, just personal preference. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

they have a key pad as a add on.

you can also do the drone setup, where you use your phone as a key fob.
also smart watch too.


i would just put the key fob in a zip lock and make it water resistant enough.

I've been planning this as well. What I'm going to do is find a coded key box that screws onto the vehicle for holding the key secure. These are cheap but effective, just a mechanical number code to open. I'm going to mount that under and hidden on a frame member somewhere. Then I'm going to make a sheet metal box that will cover this, held in place by spring clips or similar, and paint it flat black so that it just appears to be part of the car and nothing special.

Out here, a lot of surfers leave their keys behind when they're in the water. A lot just use the magnetic holders, but one of the more clever solutions is to use a realtor lock box on the tow hitch or door handle.

How About a Simple Solution?

If your truck is too smart to let you use a mechanical key, this simple solution will not help:

1) Leave remote/electronic key/fob hidden inside truck,
2) Wear this surfing, kayaking, diving, mud-running... etc.

I do the same thing except I use 2 dog tag bead chains.

I put mine in a small dry box, along with my wallet & phone... works very well.

Also, you can use the non-fob valet key if it has to be on you and get wet...

Simple, inexpensive, foolproof solution, right?

I always keep a door key in my wallet. But if you're planning on ditching the wallet too... IMO I would just recommend hiding it in the undercarriage and securing it with something. Combo lockboxes seem like a cool idea until you flood them with muddy water and you have to open them with a cut-off wheel (speaking from experience). They're also easy to lockpick.

that's one of the things I miss most about my Ford..Loved that keypad..would drive my wife nuts when I left the keys in the car when we went out..I agree that something magnetic you can put underneath seems like the best solution..

My 4runner is a fishing machine, and I'm living in salmon flyfishing heaven thanks to geoarbitrage. I've been using RAD4Runner's solution for 15 years now, with several different vehicles. FOB is stashed safely away in the vehicle.

On some dicey trips, I've stashed a spare key in the endcap of the OEM roof rack, and told the rest of the members of my group where it is, just in case.

I remember the guys on the nissan titan forum were buying an aftermarket keypad and putting inside the gastank door. I sure wish that were available to us. In the meanwhile, the valet key on a string hasn't let me down once. Maybe one day a stout mosquito will fly off with it

When I mountain bike I just lock the truck, then flip open the trailer plug and hang keys from there.

That's far too simple, much too cheap, not bluetooth-enabled, and doesn't come from a factory with cool stickers. Fail.

-I kid, I've had a hardware store copy of my ignition key in my wallet for years, works great to get in the car and is waterproof if I fall in the creek.

I lock the keys in the truck...
and put one single spare key on a spring clip or carabiner...
and hook it to a belt loop.

You could also buy one of those fake rocks with a secret compartment...
and leave it near your truck, next to some real rocks.
