LED daytime running lights?

Has anyone replaced there daytime running lights with LED's
I tried 2 different kinds and they wouldn't work. The kind with 5-6 on the end and expensive kind with like 20 LED's in a 360 degree config. on like a barrel.I even tried 2 sets of these because they sent me another pair when the first didn't work.

The daytime running lights are also the the turn signals and I've read that most LED's don't play well with flasher assemblies.

Let us know if you find one that works.

This is something I have been itching to do as well. It looks like the only alternative the ugly orange bulb is a mirrored 2825 amber bulb. When it's off it will give the appearance of being invisible. And when it's on, it will still appear amber (which will stay legal). The only downside is that because of the mirror coating on the bulb, the light output will be slightly less. I think this is the way I'm going to go though as I cant stand the nice clear lens with that ugly amber bulb ruining it. haha :boxer:

dont use the cheap led drls. Use Hella or Philips Drls.
Here are ones that I was gonna put on my 4runner which I never got.
If you want them, pm me for details. These are the ones that go on the audi's, mercedes, porsche, etc...

Designed for safety

I thought he's talking about replacing the 1156NA bulbs in the front DRL 's and that serve as turn signals too(right next to the fog lights). Your talking about adding a new set of LED lights as DRL's? Plenty of options for that .

Does anyone know for a FACT what LED's can be used as turn signals and DRL's too.

LED daytime running lights

I called HIDcarkits and the guy there told me that if I installed LED running lights that they would flicker!

Found this on-line....

Turn signal issues with LED bulbs
LED brake/tail lamps will not flash with thermal flasher units due to their extremely low current draw. Also, with stock flasher units, the turn signals may flash faster than normal (Hyper-Flash). These installations will require an electronic flasher unit, available in our car bulb shopping category (for some vehicles) or at your auto parts store. Try to find flashers designed to work with LED bulbs, they will say "LED compatible". Often HEAVY DUTY flashers will also work with LED bulbs.

We offer some LED Flashers in our Tail/Brake Turn Signal Bulb category but we do not know which one (if any) will fit your vehicle. You will have to compare the pin-out of your flasher with the pin-outs of the flashers we offer, to see if we have a match, BEFORE you order one. Sorry but we do not have a flasher application list or the expertise to tell you which of our flashers will fit your vehicle.

Another fix is the installation of Load Resistors which are wired across (in parallel with) the turn signal bulbs to simulate the load of a standard filament bulb. We also have these available in our car bulb shopping category.

Dash indicators reporting burnt out bulbs
LED bulbs may cause some newer vehicles to indicate a bulb is burnt out (because of their low power consumption). Some cars indicate this by increasing the flash rate of the turn signals, some turn on a bad bulb indicator. The only fix for this is to install Load Resistors across the bulbs that are being indicated as bad. Some vehicles will also disable the cruise control system if a brake light bulb is being indicated as bad, the installation of Load Resistors will also solve this problem.

Super Bright LEDs - Conversion to LED Car Bulbs

Things to keep in mind.

I love the DRL's on this new truck . They are so bright . Wish they would stay on all the time with hi/low beams but still have the option to turn them off when you need to . Also would like my fogs to do that.

I am positive my DRL's have saved me from crashes in the past. My o6 4R had some bright ones but not like the 2011. They really kick but and would like then on as fogs ect... during bad weather

"Increased energy consumption"

Are you freakin kidding me! I get the fact their studies don't show a statistical significance in reducing accidents, but their arguments that DRLs have a negative impact is a bit of a stretch.

I'm going to start the Association of Drivers Against Drivers Against Daytime Runninng Lights (DADADRL)

#1 Argument: they are speeding up global warming by wasting energy turning on their computers and writing such crap!:sniper:

I don't know for a "FACT" if this will work, but the VLED website and their YouTube videos say that it will work. The VLED "Switchback" LED is a white DRL which automatically switches to amber when blinking as a turn signal. VLED sells the cheaper "Type 2" LED which has an output rating of 3 and requires a Replacement Flasher module to eliminate hyperflash. VLED also sells the more expensive and brighter "V3 Triton" LED which has an output rating of 5 and has a built in resistor which eliminates hyperflash. The V3 Triton LED also goes into a 50% dim parking (white) mode when headlights are turned on. The light output of the V3 Triton LED is 600 lumens White and 430 lumens Amber. For comparison, the light output of an 1156NA bulb is only 302 lumens Amber.

The flash I think it causes by the rise voltage during triggering.
Try the one with broad voltage range.

Those look very very nice! This thread is practically 3 years old and they weren't out at the time.
We would need to get the ones with built in resistors since our flasher modules are housed inside a sealed small black box they call an ECU now and not accessible.

harper7,
You are spot on about the flasher. I chose not to dig into it. Instead, I used external resistors in parallel...they work just fine, and are very bright. Used the 45 LED version...they can be seen in the daylight, and work very good as turn signals.

I saw the way you modded the socket to connect the resistors in that other thread, pretty nifty idea! I hate the way Toyota designed the turn signal socket to be so "efficient", for lack of a better description. It really limits us to what kind of bulbs we can run since the darn socket has to be connect to the housing in order to feed power to the brake and reverse bulbs...

Can't find DRL compatible lights

I have a 2015 (rth gen) 4r ltd and the DRL are just the high-beams driven at a lower level.

If I try the various HB3 LED kids out there I get pulsing or flickering.

Given the number of vehicles which do this I'm wondering why the drivers don't accommodate this?

Can anyone give me a recommendation of known working high-beams that also work in DRL mode?

Thanks!

The closest fix for the slight pulsing/flickering is to order something like this:
DDM Tuning: HID and LED Lighting

However, this will just make your DRL's the same brightness/intensity as if you had your high beams on. Another option some people do is to disable the DRL's. As far as I I know, there isn't any other fix at the moment to keep the LEDs at normal intensity without slight flickering/pulsing..

Confirmed. There is no LED kit nor bulbs that replicate the OEM function. It's either full on brights (i.e. brights as DRLs) or you get a flicker (which is actually full on bright flickering haha).

Hopefully one day we will get that sorted- it's possible, but the result will likely be a bit pricey. The guys at Baja Designs and XenonDepot have worked magic before though, so here's to hoping.
