I was finally able to get a comparison shot of the different LED dome lights I've tried.
The LED array on the left is one from autolumination (el cheapo LEDs that WILL burn out - I don't recommend them - try V-LEDs or Oznium if you really want to go this route).
The one in the middle is an old version of the TaskLED dome module. The one on the right is the CURRENT TaskLED dome module.
Last night, I did some testing in a 100% dark room using my power supply to juice up these three LED modules to 13v. The Lumen output of the two TaskLED modules is known (and fixed since they're electronically regulated), so I figured I could make a reasonable engineering guesstimate using a light meter (used in photography) to figure out what the output of the LED array was. Keep in mind that 13v is about the power in the vehicle with the engine running, and it is closer to 12v when the engine is shut off. I had previously believed that the LED array was dimmer than the older TaskLED dome based on what my eyeballs told me with them mounted in the vehicle, but my testing actually proved otherwise. :xnuts: :headslap: I think the cooler color temperature of the LED array (much cooler actually), and the fact that the array is dimmer when the engine isn't running may have fooled me. (so I suppose I wasn't totally wrong)
If I was forced to put a number on it based on my little informal test results, I would say the LED array on the left puts out about 50 Lumens, or 25% more than the older TaskLED module at the voltage levels in the vehicle with the engine running (the human eye needs a 20% difference in brightness to perceive a difference, and there is just *barely* a noticable difference). The TaskLED modules are spec'd at 40 Lumens for the old one, and 100 Lumens for the new one (currently - once he runs out of his current batch of 100 Lumen Luxeon Rebel LEDs, they'll be 70 Lumens like the website shows). The thing to keep in mind though is that the LED array was drawing TWICE the power of the two TaskLED modules (a little over 3 Watts vs. 1.5 Watts). If you could crank up the new Luxeon Rebel module to that power level, it would be putting out nearly 180 Lumens!!! (but would also need heatsinking)
It is hard to believe that the teeny tiny Luxeon Rebel 100 on the far right puts out TWICE the light of the array on the Left, but it does (without even pushing it hard). :bugeye: :bigok: :dancin:
Anyway, the main thing I wanted to show here is the SIZE difference between these three modules; the current TaskLED dome module is tiny!!! I was barely able to squeeze the old TaskLED dome module into the rear cargo lamp in my '99, but the new one fits with PLENTY of room to spare. This means the TaskLED modules will now fit places they didn't before as they're barely bigger than the festoon bulb they replace. The new TaskLED dome modules rock! HTH.
