LED is out for Off setting in Heat Controls

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2004 V8 Four Runner Limited and I just noticed that the little LED light behind the OFF selector on the Heat control Dial is not lit when the Airconditioning/Heating System is turned off.

Lights for other settings suchs as Hi Lo, AC do light up when you make the selection.

Now, I can't remember whether the Off light has ever come on when I turned off the heat system. I think it has but I am not sure. I can see that it looks like it is supposed to light up since I do see a white triange on the Off button.

Can anyone please help and let me know if that light is on when your system is Off?

If that is the case, then I have to go to the dealer to get that fixed. In case it is broken, any idea how it can be fixed, without having those dealers butcher my controls up?

Consider yourself lucky. I can't see any of my HVAC controls when there is any sunlight. It is a guess as to what the HVAC is doing.

They will have to disassemble your dash to repair/replace the bulbs. There is a TSB on this subject somewhere. I just accept it, I don't want them ripping into my factory tight dash.

The HVAC controls come out easily -- there is only 1 screw holding them in place. The screw is located at the bottom of the control panel just above (and slightly recessed) storage cubby. A firm yank will pop out the modulue. There are 3 wires plugs to disconnect on the back side. IIRC, all of the bulbs are the twist and pop-out kind.

No other parts have to be removed from your dash. I've had this (and many more) part of my dash removed several times and I've yet to develop a rattle in the dash area. It's built fairly well and mostly with nylon covered snap-on connectors that don't tend to bend, distort or otherwise loose their ability to fit firm and snug.

Nope, no LED light when in the Off position.

The LED light for the OFF button has never lit up in my truck. It's just there for symmetry.

Man a while back I noticed that in my GS400, the "ECT" rocker switch that selected "sport", "snow", or "normal" shifting/traction modes did not light up, where as the seat heater switches and "VSC" (vehicle stability control) lights lit up just fine.

So instead of opening things up I just asked people to let me know if their were lit up or not so I'd know if it was normal. Strangely enough we found that with 98-00 models, about 70% of them were not lit up (on only that button), and the other 30% did have that button lit up. 2001 and later it was reversed in that around 70% had it light up, and 30% didn't.

So either that part is highly susceptible to failure (while the other parts are somehow not), or Lexus just decided to only install a backlight for that switch depending on whether it was a full moon out the night they built or... er... something like that.

I don't think you should bother to remove your HVAC controls. I don't think there it should light up. Mine hasn't since the day I got it.
