Anyone who's been following this thread might have noticed that I got in line for one of Dane's under hood kits well before my new 4Runner arrived at the dealer. And it worked out perfectly, as my kit arrived the day after I brought the 4Runner home!
The next weekend, I started installing the kit, but unfortunately, one of the three strands of lights wasn't working. I contacted Dane, and he replied almost immediately. We looked at the option of him just shipping a replacement for the damaged segment (the third, or last, on the string of three), but Dane wanted the kit to have like new integrity and water resistance, so he built and sent a new string of lights.
This new string arrived today, I installed it this afternoon, and just went outside to take photos in the dark. I am extremely pleased with the results! There is even light across the entire engine bay, without any overly bright areas. Based on earlier photos, I was concerned that the side pair of lights would be shining in my face, and be too bright. That's not the case at all.
I chose "warm white" as the color for my set of lights, and I'm glad I did. Some of the photos of other kits appeared almost bluish to me, but the warm white "seems" to me to be just a natural daylight color.
Throughout this process, Dane has been very thorough in his communications, professional in handling a problem, and very pleasant to work with. I'll be sure to mention him as a source if anyone is looking for under hood lights or asks about mine.

[EDIT] By the way, I want to thank [MENTION=70631]pjbrownva[/MENTION] back on post #92 for the clear instructions. It made the installation easy.
And I forgot to comment on the rocker switch. It comes with a waterproof cover, and while this helps to protect the switch, I found that it prevents the switch from fully seating in the supplied mount, so that occasionally it pops out when switching the LEDs off or on. I plan to eventually add a distribution block under the hood, and when I do, I'm going to rewire the switch and see if I can get it to fit a little tighter.

Ok guys this is the rear hatch kit for 3rd gen runners. I'll explain a few things I did and the install process but I would like to point out that I have all the lights facing the center of the cargo area and not facing down. This is because I have the factory rear light to light the area closest to the door and didn't need more light there. During the install I disconnected one of the cables attached to the dome light so the rear looks dark but I'll post new pics once I re solder the piece. I have this kit connected to the dome power so it only turns on when the door is open. If you want a switch then dane will provide one and you can mount it where ever.

I can definitely post more pictures and answer any questions for anyone considering this kit. I promise if you have some simple tools we can get this kit in your 4Runner. Ok so this hatch kit was version 2.0 and I think we got it right this time. I didn't want an additional switch to control it so I removed the dome light and spliced into the power there. Blue is pos and green is neg.
With this setup the light will come on every time you open the rear hatch and can not be turned off. I can go into further detail with this piece if needed but since I did this install alone and usually during a break at work I don't have a lot of photos. Once there I used zip ties to hold the strip in place while I moved it around to get its position perfect. All I did was run a zip tie all the was down to about the size of my knuckle and cut the tail piece down to about 2 inches. Then I shoved the tail piece in between the headliner and trim to secure it
I did this all the way around the 3 sides that have trim. Then I ran the wire through and tested it before removing the back of the tape.
Once everything was where I wanted it I started removing one side of tape and sticking the lights to the trim piece so it faced in and not down, again it was personal preference you can stick your facing down for more direct light. As I did this I pulled and slide the zip ties down the cord until I had several built up and just cut them off using some snips. This method should work for all 3 sides that have trim.
For the side going across the back near the rear seats I tried a couple of different things. On the first strip I used the tape provided on the strip but because of the length and the texture of the fabric it did not stick for very long. I also tried stronger tape but that again failed and I ended up getting some heavy duty Velcro circles and using them. I wanted to make it work using something that could easily be removed for anyone looking to add this but not wanting to make it permanent or not wanting to damage anything while installing this. In the future I plan I cutting slits in the headliner and using small zip ties to secure the wire in place to give it a slightly cleaner look. For the Velcro install I simply attached a circle about every 2-3 inches down the back and attached them to the headliner.
I did not remove the backing for the tape on this side I simply attached the Velcro to the red plastic on the back of the tape. I think it came out great and I want to thank dane for working with me on this to make sure it came out exactly how I wanted it to. Agreed. If you are going to mount a switch for this kit it will require removal of some trim pieces and some drilling. You will also have to run wires all the way from the battery to the rear. If you go my way you'll need to splice and connect from the rear dome light. Either way I'd make sure your comfortable with what's needed before getting this kit.
