LED Map lights

Out of personal experience I would go with amber, white lights up everything super bright to the point it hurts your eyes. I love the whites I have but if I found amber sooner I would have gotten them.

It's probably personal preference, but I find that amber is muddy and unclear, and red isn't bright enough. I have white LEDs in the dome light and map lights in my '85, they're super bright and I like them like that.

They're cheap enough, OP, just pick a color and run with it. If you don't like it, pick another color. :)

Hey I got a stupid question;

How do you get at the bulbs?

Answered my own question; the entire central bezel pops off, the parting line nearly at the headliner. I took off that little central cap surrounding the rear view stem, hooked behind the cover with a painters scraper to pop the bezel off the backing plate. Imagine you could go straight to the parting line, but that line is NOT the one about a half inch off the roof. gen2 in case it matters

Don't attack the lenses, they are semi-riveted to the front bezel

If its like the 80's truck lights (two lights with separate switches, separate from the dome light), you have to grab the front edge by the buttons and pry outward (like going towards the back of the truck), then slip it off the mount.

Hard to explain, and its sorta tough to pop out, but there's a couple of tabs where it meets the ceiling on the edge (same edge as the two buttons) that you're trying to pull the frame away from. Don't worry though, the more you take it out, the easier it will be to remove it!:biggrin2:

EDIT:

Okay, just went to the garage and realized I have it backwards! Ignore the above and do it this way:

Push forward (towards the windshield) here and the opposite side (can't show both hands, since I had to take the photo!):

Then, with your pointer finger, pull this downward on both sides:

It should pop down, you can then slide it rearward over the switches. Here's the inside:

In case you wanna see where the 4 tabs are, here ya go:

And now I need to go clean the cover and vinyl headliner! Good god its filthy in my truck!!!!

I also want to replace the map and dome (both cab and trunk) lights from my 2nd gen and my Samurai, so I went ahead and ordered a handful of the festoon type LED replacements like these in the attached picture.

But after I ordered them, I wondered if they would fit inside the dome just like that, or if I should have ordered the type where the little board is separated from the festoon (so it can be relocated inside the dome). Anyone knows if the ones I got will fit?

I got some like you pictured from amazon and they fit with a bit of bending of the metal prong mounts to ensure they won't rattle out over time. The LEDs I got were the proper size according to the part number however it must have been a bad batch I got because mine were supposed to be 31mm yet they were a tight fit and measured out to about 35mm but I made them work.

The lights I got were positive/negative sensitive so if yours don't work when you do a test fit and flip them 180 and they should work. I had that moment of frustration and disappointment when I had that happen to me.

Best budget mod I think, great functionality and improvement over the old.
