Lets group E-mail Toyota demanding V8

Show me a link, I may be wrong.

CH-2, section 4 says flex lock-up in 3rd gear as well. I imagine it the flex lock-up was added to 3rd gear sometime after the doc you linked.

Talking to the quality engineer at my plant, he was saying that flex lock-up is available in 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6th gear of our transmission*. I'm a production engineer, so I don't have that understanding of the assembly testers, but it sounds like Toyota is pretty aggressive with the flex lock-up these days. I might have to check the TIS at work tomorrow to confirm for the 4Runner.

Neat fact about the Aisin 5ATs in our 4Runners: AWNC builds the A750 in North Carolina and exports some of them to Japan. Some of those exported ATs end up in 4Runners. Despite having japan built 4Runners, some of us might have US built ATs.

* My transmission is a transverse mounted FWD/AWD AT and is a more recent design than the A750.

I do remember hearing about an update mid-cycle and that sounds like it was the update to the 3rd gear.

That's pretty disheartening to learn that some of the transmissions are shipped over to Japan. Isn't it a law to show on the window sticker where certain components are manufactured? Last time I was shopping for cars engine, transmission and other misc. important components were listed as well as their point of assembly.

What is the disclaimer you have with a *?

I disagree with this. I tow my boat at least once per week from Spring to Fall. Some of the hills I regularly tow over are steep. My setup weighs in a little over 2,200 lbs- more when full of fuel(23 gal) and supplies. The performance is commendable. No hunting for gears, no excessive downshifting. The torque converter unlocks, and it goes right up no problem. The grade logic does an awesome job holding speed on downgrades too. As an added bonus, I get 17-18mpg towing.

Your setup is 1000 lbs? C'mon- no way you can tell me that has a significant impact on your performance, because it doesn't.

My previous vehicle was a Titan beast. I was expecting to miss all that power and torque while towing. Know what I miss? The v8 soundtrack-
That's it. 12 mpg gets old real quick. Keep the v8, I like my v6.

Have you had the V8 4Runner? Again the V6 when compared to the V8 4Runner does not tow, or climb nearly as well. Yes 1,000 lbs up a steep grade has an impact on performance. I'm not worried about MPG, I'm averaging 18.3 MPG. Also, there is a huge difference between the 5.6 endurance V8 and the 4.7 IFORCE. Nissan has really never excelled with fuel economy.

I'm glad you like your V6, different strokes for different folks. Enjoy your ride

Go buy a diesel Toureg. Seriously. Demand comes first. Supply follows suit every time.

I've just come back from driving the Touareg TDI - wow, do I love that thing, and it was this old-man brown colour with baby-poo brown interior.
Feels like an A6, but quicker, taller, and able to pull a locomotive uphill. Up here it's $51k to start, only 2 grand more than a Limited.

Is that the V10? That thing is RIDICULOUS. They pulled a 747 on Top Gear with it.

Correct, t'was the V6, V10 is only in Europe, I think.
But that little six-pot has 406 lb.-ft. of torque as early as 1,750 rpm and 225 horse. 8-speed automatic transmission is a little busy, but highway consumption is rated at 6.8L/100km highway, 11.2 city (or 34.5 US mpg and 21)
It is a unibody, but can tow up to 7,700 lbs. And seriously luxurious, very quiet. VW apparently can't keep them in stock - up to 9 month waiting list.

Quentin, I've come into some new information. The 4Runner and the Land Cruiser are the last Toyota vehicles to be made 100% in Japan with 100% manufactured Japanese components. These are the only two Toyota's (cars) to be made at their world renowned Tahara plant.

The FJ Cruiser is manufactured at the Hamura plant which is owned by Hino; a company that Toyota outsources assembly to. The FJ is made from outsourced parts from Toyota keiretsu companies.

I received this information from someone who received an intimate tour of the Tahara plant and witnessed the assembly of the 4Runner and Land Cruiser hands on.

I wonder if Toyota is going to ship production state side to be more cost effective. I really hope not as it seems the best made Toyotas are built in Japan.

They never will. The Land Cruiser is sold in nearly 50 countries with demand far higher than in the US. Furthermore, the Prado, which shares the same chassis as the 4Runner is in equally high demand in other parts of the world.

They have no reason to bring production here. They actually manufacture the frames at there truck facility at which point there put on a truck and shipped across town to the Tahara plant where final assembly is done.

I was thinking that Tahara was a customer. I could be wrong.

Does Toyota make the 5.7L in the LC and LX somewhere in Japan? I'm sure it could come down a flex line with other UR V8s, but it seems like it would make sense to utilize Toyota Alabama's assembly line for all the 5.7Ls. Is the 5.7L offered in other markets in the LC or US only?

Good to hear. It just seems vehicles built in Japan hold up better.

Tahara is Teuton premier plant. The 5.7 is made there from Japanese components. Yes, it is offered in other markets.
