you like the deckplate mod better than that? that looks like a pretty high quality intake... did you remove the snorkel and what size hole do you have in ur intake for the deckplate mod?

i have a 4" deckplate. and yes, i do like the deckplate better. while the fram looks awesome, price/horsepower was nuts. it was almost $20 per horse on their dyno sheet. the deckplate actually pulls more air than the fram kit.
but yes, you cant go wrong with fram's build quality, that thing was solid. the heat shield just suffocated the car of air.

Did you ever remove the heatshield and just use the aluminum tube/cone filter? I am investigating what is better between that set up (no heat shield) or the deckplate mod...or even a combo of using the aluminum tubing and the stock airbox...

I didnt remove the heat shield and try it. It would defeat the purpose of cold air intake. With the stock airbox, its already pulling air from the fender which is cold and the deckplate pulls more cold air with force from the headlight.
ISR and deckplate are both less than $220 for the CAI.... do those and you will be happier, and so will your wallet.

I am still curious about just a aluminum tube like the $10 ones off ebay because that increases the airflow because there is less resistance inside the tube caused by all the ridges/silencer/bends etc. and putting a good cone on the front of it, not a cold air just a short ram, in my mind it should get the same pull of air the hacked box would get but have a better flow up the tubing...maybe i'm way off guess I'll jsut have to buy one and see what happens!
I never really considered the expensive cai like the one you used because to me it did seem very restricting, it looked like really the only air it pulled would be behind the cone...where all the hot air is from the engine. Thanks for the insites though

you don't have any experience with these do you? I know I don't want the k&n thats just like the fram, thos burtmanindustries look pretty good though anybody ever used any of those?

Yes, the true flow I do. It's a simple and easy way to add some HP and gas mileage if you don't want to axe the factory box. It comes with a new highflow air filter, as well. The Airaid is similiar, but uses a platic tube (true flow is metal), and comes with an Airaid filter.

The volant caught my eye i'm curious if it plugs into the snorkel hole as well, it almost looks like it, that would be impressive...expensive but all of those would be simple to duplicate with a peice of sheetmetal, maybe its time for some experimenting

Those intakes are for people with bucks to throw around since any performance gains can be realized for $150 less. SC'd engines can extract more from a proper intake system plus they look good under the hood and those fit that application better.
The Volant is the most complete hence the price but the True Flow seems rediculous when compared to the very similar Airaid kit. Why is the cost diff so extreme?

Main differences are you have a metal tube which is powder coated on the true flow, vs the airaid is plastic. The true flow comes with a true flow airfilter. They both are made to do the same thing, but it's just preferece really.
Also, the decplate mod with just the true flow air filter helps.

what is the downside of using a cheap pipe from ebay, putting a decent cone filter on it and then building a case to enclose it similar to the volant? seems like you could do it for say ~$30?

Airaid and trueflow test everything and the diameter of the tubing they are using for the 3.4. Every tube, every size, performs different on every vehicle. Some of the price I'm sure is tried up in R&D costs which provide the most efficent unit for the engine it's mated with.

i would asume that all the tubing has to be the same size because the throttle body can only accept 1 size really.
