Forgot to say. For the money, I'd go for the Yoko AT-S. Local guy runs them on his 3rd Gen and it does pretty well off-road. Mich AT2's are good tires, but about twice the cost of the Yoko's.

How long do the Yoko's last?

You will see at least 60,000-70,000 from the LTX's.
 
Yokohama Geolander A/T-S

A good compromise choice of the three you mentioned in terms of price and ability, but just average for offroad / all terrain use


BFG Rugged Trail T/A

Used these twice due to OEM from other manufacturers. Someone else said it best, a street tire that looks A/T


Michelin LTX A/T 2

Gets raves for A/T use, but also get complaints on road for some tracking issues

There's one you didn't mention, maybe you should look into, the Firestone A/T choice. I haven't used it, but did consider it once then decided to go M/T. The price is excellent, and it gets very strong reviews with no major negatives.
 
I don't have any experience with those tires. I've been running Michelin Cross Terrains for the past 40k miles and they don't look anywhere near worn out yet. They are a road tire -- decent tracking and reasonably quiet. They do fine on the beach. In the winter, I run a dedicated snow tire. The Cross Terrains are not a tough looking tire, which is what I'm guessing that you are looking for.

Here is my take on treadlife. If you've got a tire that lasts a long time, then it's performance will suffer. Usually, when you've got a really hard compound (long life), performance obviously lacks. Look at MT's--great off road performance, but they don't last as long. Some come with a dual compound that has a softer outer and hard inner. My BFG KO's are good for maybe 20k miles, then after that, the tire compound changes to a harder compound and performance starts going down the drain (this is when I usually sell the tires and get new ones).

But to answer your question, around 40-50k miles for the ATS.
 
Consumer Reports rates the Yokohama Geolander better than the Michelin LTX. Both tires are "rated" as 500AB. So rating says they both have the same treadwear rating.

What I would like to see in ratings is how a tire performs at 30-40k miles for example because like people have mentioned, tire compound changes and the performance of the tire is different.
 
Out of that trio, my picks would be as follows:

Geolander

LTX

Rugged Trails (I'd avoid this one)

But then again I'd buy the tires I'm running (Discoverer ATR) again before I'd buy any of those 3 tires.
 
For those who decide to buy off road tires, what percentage of your driving is actually off road?

I ended up buying BFG Long Trail TA Tourings.....as I don't go offroad at all really.
 
My mom has the Yoks on her '99 Limited and she's happy with them and since her Runner sees only 5-6000 miles a year she didn't want to spend money on some tire that lasts 75k since the tire will be old before it wears out;the same will go for the Geolandars but she didn't spend a ton on them on a tire that will still see 50,000 miles easily.
 
Can we throw in the cash equation into the mix?

Dollar for Dollar, what tire are you finding to be the best buy? In may our 04 if getting lifted and I want to run a 285. I'm trying to do this as inexpensivly as possible

You have to decide what you want out of your tire.
 
Worth a look...

Recently I've noticed some intelligent decisions being made by members in terms of value when selecting new tires. As we all know the price of the BFG's, Revo's, GW Kevlars, etc...are established because of the demand and the fact that they are (for the most part) reliable and worth the price. I'v had those brands and believe in them...However, when I wanted a new tire with aggressive looks, advanced technology and a GREAT price, I found myself looking at some "not-well-known" brands that have been proven to perform just as well for significantly less.

Must "looks"
1) Hankooks ATm Rf10's
2) Kumho MT or (for more highway) SAT Kl-61- (great looking tire)
3) Maxxis (especially their MT's Buckshot) but they also have an AT-771

Do some research and you will be able to find what you seek...and for final $$$ checks...look at ebay.
