When I had the audio system installed, they Dynamatted everything inside and out from taking down the headliner, going into the doors, the hatch and including the gas tank door and the license plate to prevent rattling from the audio system. I have it all touched up periodically.

I put a self adhesive rubber bumper near the bottom edge, back side of the plate so that it pre-loads the plate slightly away from the body. This is one of those items you might get from Radio Shack for the bottom of a metal electronic chassis. It is about 3/8" square and about 3/8" high. I'm not sure if Radio Shack has this exact item but you might find something that works like this.

My uncle has the noise with his. Everytime he closes any of the doors, the back license plate rattles. Mine doesn't do this though and I only have the plate with a frame tightened with the top two screws. I'm guessing it has something to do with the license plate frame since mine is different than my uncle's.

As members before me suggested, I placed a strip of self adhesive weather stripping along the entire length/bottom behind my license plate. It about 1 cm thick. Just enough so that it lifts the plate away slightly from the hatch surface. Slam the doors all you want - no rattle. It also helps to have a heavy plate frame if you use one. A heavy license plate frame won't rattle as much.

For the rear plate, I placed of double stick tape behind the top screw holes and punched them out when I put the plate on. I also put a piece of soft sponge on the bottom of the plate that pushes it away from the hatch. Alternative, you can probably use some rubber bumpers/feet that Home Depot carries to stick on the bottom of things so they don't slide or mar the surface. (It's where they also have the cork and felt pads/bumpers in the hardware section.)

Similar to what other's have done, but what I found useful and safe for the paint are those self adhesive furniture mover pads. It's what people stick under the legs of furniture in order to easily slide them across wood/tile floors without scratching the floor. They come in either strips or circular patterns. I chose the strips pattern. All I did was adhere 3 strips onto the back of the license plate and viola, no more vibrations.
Oh btw, I purchased the pads @ OSH. I'm sure any other hardware store carries them as well.

I used 1/4" 3m foam with adhesive backing. I cut 4 small squares and have them on the bottom right and left corners between the plate & tailgate, and the frame and the plate. No more noise!!
I stuck the tape to the back of the plate NOT the tailgate, the foam seems soft so I dont think it will hurt the paint.

Little clear rubber stops, like the ones used on cabinets. Attached in a row on the car. not the license plate. It's a permanent fix. Lasts' through the winters too.

I did exactly the same... just used a couple of clear plastic half-inch bumpers from a local hardware store. Stuck them to the back of the license plant frame and now it's fine and also the frame no longer traps dirt and scratches the paint. Did the same on the front. Price: 99 cents. Time: 5 minutes.
