License Plate Screws/Bolts

Does anyone know what the exact sizes are?

TSB # PG012-02 describes how both the front and rear license plates are attached, and includes the exact specs for the screws.

The fronts are self-tapping. Length: 16.5-20.0 mm (0.65-0.79 in), Diameter: 6 mm (0.24 in)

The rears go into threaded holes in the door. Length: 25.0 mm (0.98 in) OR LESS - longer will hit the window, Diameter: 6 mm (0.24 in), Pitch: 1 mm (0.04 in)

Anyone have some good tips on getting rusted plate screws out? I have a plate cover on mine (plate on lift gate) and the one screw is rusted on and I can not get the cover off to put the plate sticker on.

A small drill bit and a small eazyout tool, might solve this problem. Soak it with penetrant oil overnite before trying to get it out.

If WD-40 doesn't work, try a silicone type lubricant.

I had something similar happen to me, i was trying to remove the screw and the head twisted right off. I ended up drilling out the old screw and retaping the hole. The tap actually found the original threads so it worked great. Sorry I dont remember the size of the tap I used.

My screws rusted and heads broke when I tried to get them out. I had to drill out the old screws and installed backup camera integrated into license plate frame with nuts and bolts. 100% tamper proof. Takes some time to get the license plate out (about 30-40 min), but I don't changed my plates ever during 6 years of ownership

I used stainless tamper-proof bolts like you see in bathrooms. So far so good -- vanity plate still in place.

Quick note to future readers. If you have nuts holding your license plate on, it means the heads have come off at some point. This may have happened prior to your ownership, or out there in the great Rust belt.
You can either keep using them until they are too short or drill them out.
I opened up the plastic panel inside the rear hatch and cut off the plastic pieces then drilled them out. I then got 2 6mm bolts from Lowes and threaded them back in.
Good as new.
