Lift and mpg. Need input.

Hey all, I know mpg has been talked about to death on here. I'm not here to compare the v6 to v8 or anything. I just bought an 06 v6 4x4 with 3" lift and bfg tires. 265/75-17 I believe. Anyway after 4 fill ups I'm getting around 14.5 mpg. It has 110k and I'm sure maintenance is due but what are my fellow v6 lifted runners getting mpg wise? I didn't buy this rig for the great mpg, I know it wasn't made for that but I assumed if in stock form they can get hazards of 20mpg hwy I didn't think just a lift and tires would drop it 6mpg. That's jeep territory...haha. Just post up your averages if you got um. Thanks!

At what speed are you getting that mpg? I have the same setup except currently running snow tires. I get 22 mpg at 62 mph and 15 mpg at 72 mph if below 20 degrees F if in the 40's or higher temp then I go up to 17 mpg.

Damn thats low! I have 3 inch spacer lift with 265/70/17 tires and get about 17-18mpg and thats with bad 02 sensors and bad cat. Mine is an 07 v6 4x4 with 124,000 on it.

I think there's a thread around here somewhere that has a lot of the information you're looking for.. but in case you're not.

2003 3" lift on 285's ~190,000 miles I average right around 15 mpg.

That sounds low, are you heavy on the peddle on the right. I noticed a great improvement when i altered my driving habits and highway speed. Now im getting about 17 with about 4.5" lift on 33" muds, roof rack, and lightbar.

Definitely depends how fast you drive and how heavy your foot is.

I don't go much above 70-75 on the freeway, and have a fairly light foot (but I drive a lot in the city, and a lot of mountain passes.)

I average between 16-20 overall, higher end being in the summer.

3" lift, 33x10.5 tires.

There are so many variables here that it is driving my OCD crazy

1. Are we all going by the dash readout or by calculating by the odometer and gallons used at fill-ups.

2. Are we calculating for the increased tire size? Larger tires cover more ground than the odometer says.

3. Fuel. You have the v6 which from what I understand means you have to use premium fuel. If you're not doing so mileage will be effected.

4. The weather. Colder weather means longer to warm up and more fuel being used. Also tire pressure is effected by the weather.

5. Driving style. Fast acceleration, high speed (wind resistance), stop and go driving, warming it up in the driveway, lots of short trips... all make a big difference.

to appease questioning,

1. calculated by hand/scangauge
2. adjusted for tire size
3. regular unleaded, v6 does not require premium and most say they notice no difference from 87 to 93
4. yes i let my vehicle warm up, usually about 3 minutes. tire pressures are the same as they are year round, i checked
5. i drive conservatively and don't hammer it everywhere, but I'm not a grandma

I don't have a heavy foot persay, haha. I cruise about 80 on the interstate. I'd get ran over if I did 65-70. But from a stop I'm light on the gas. I just bought plugs and I'm gonna do all my fluids next week. I'll report back after its all on and I go through another tank or so.

When I bought my 2003 V6 4Runner a year ago I did the following service items and it improved the mpg.
Replaced front, rear, and center diff fluid with Mobil 1
Engine oil change with 5W30 Mobil 1
Replaced the spark pugs
Replaced the air filter
Ran a bottle of chevron techron

One more thing worth mentioning..tire rating/weight

and resulting rolling resistance. The more the # of plys the more the tires going to weight resulting in it taking longer to roll up to speed. Also check your tire PSI

It matters if it's an indication of something grossly malfunctioning. Especially if it has a ripple effect (ie bad o2 sensor making the system run rich, worse fuel economy, and destroys the cats).
