Lift on a 4cyl?

I have a 99 2WD 4cyl and im pretty new to this.
I went to my local offroad shop to ask about a 2-3in lift (suspension or body) for my 4runner, simply for looks. They said that it wasn't possible to lift a 2WD 4cyl. But when I search the net I haven't found anything saying this and all the lift kits I find don't mention restrictions on the 2WD or 4cyl.

Was the offroad shop simply telling me this because they didn't carry the right brand? Is it possible to put a 2-3in lift on my car?

LOL, people told me I wouldn't be able to mount my ARB bumper with a 3" body lift on my p/u either. Looking pretty sweet too.
