Lift Opinions

Alright guys,
I have an 06 sr5 with a 3" suspension lift. I run 285/70/17s and I am getting tired of them rubbing. I am considering adding 2" more lift in spacers. I am planning to change the upper control arms because they are already maxed out. I'm torn between the adjustable and the uniball UCA's. I will also be changing the tie rod ends while I have everything off since I am getting an alignment after. Is there anything else that I am not considering that I should change if I add 2" spacers all the way around?

Have you already cut the trim and plastic?

Unless you are have a 2WD, 5" of lift isn't a good idea.

You could add a small body lift or trim. That would include removing mudflaps, chopping the body mount and trimming the stock bumper a little (if not already done)

What are you rubbing on? Wheel offset plays a part as well

A body lift like mentioned above would be a lot better idea than spacers.

You could very easily bottom out your shocks with a large spacer lift if you don't extend your bumpstops, not to mention binding your CV's at full droop or increased CV wear due to the high angles. With a 5" suspension lift you are really maxing out the stock suspension geometry which puts stress on all the connections. Also, you will have no downtravel which means it will ride like poo.

A body lift is cheap and I've only rubbed once or twice through all the trails I've been on with 285/70R17, offset wheels, 1.5" BL, and a little trimming. No downsides to a body lift and you can go up to 2" or maybe a bit more before you start needing to extend lines and such.

I talked to a buddy at my shop, He also agreed that I should just do a body lift since all I am trying to do is avoid the rubbing. As I mentioned before I do have 3" of suspension lift already, and I also have the differential drop to reduce stress on my cv's. I have done a good bit of trimming but I can not do anymore without cutting into the bumper. I have 2" wheel spacers which do help a bit but still rubs every time I'm in reverse. A body lift is probably my best bet at this point.
As for the UCA's though, They are still stock and I have broken a few upper ball joints. Everything is still inline and wears evenly but would anyone recommend adjustable UCA's to hopefully ride a little nicer and take some stress off my ball joints or should I just keep the stock ones on?

What lift do you have now? You say 3", is it spacers or coils/coilovers/shocks? Your 2" wheel spacers are what is causing the tires to rub, that's a guarantee! Post some pics.

Next question, you say you have broken some UCA ball joints, the stock UCA ball joints are not replaceable without swapping to a new stock UCA. Explain further if you can.

I have replaced upper ball joints a few times on our Gen 4 4Runners. They are replaceable. In fact, I purchased MOOG joints and they are greasable. I replaced the lower ball joints as well without replacing the arm. However, Im also a huge fan of the aftermarket Camburg, Total Chaos or Icon upper control arms. Those three I mentioned are by far the most superior in the industry. Good luck and DO get rid of the wheel spacers.

I also used MOOG joints when replacing mine. I still have the factory 17" wheels so I can not get rid of the 1.5" wheel spacers because I am running the same tires as you. I am going to go ahead with a 1.5" body lift to give the tires more room in there. They only rub on the front bumper when I back up and turn the wheel. The 3" shock lift is just not enough. I was looking at the total chaos UCA's and really like them I am just trying to get everyone's opinion, If they are not going to make my ride any smoother or take some stress off my upper ball joints, then I am not going to spend the extra money.
